The Walking Dead series did an exceptional job in its debut season. The six episodes set the tone of what’s to come and introduced the main cast of characters. Expectations were high for the second season, and the creators did a fantastic job expanding the story with the introduction of Hershel’s Farm.

The second season picks up after the explosion at the CDC in the season 1 finale. The survivors are on the road to Ft. Benning, believing they will find help and answers there. After Sophia comes up missing, Carl is accidentally shot by Otis, a farm hand at the Greene Family farm, owned by Hershel, who administers lifesaving procedures on Carl.

This season explains more of what occurred after Rick was shot on the job and after the onset of the outbreak via flashback scenes. Shane’s true nature is also revealed when he sacrifices Otis to save himself and thus begins his downward spiral, which, by the end of the season, results in his death.

Throughout the season Rick begs Hershel to allow them to stay on the farm especially when he learns of his wife Lori’s pregnancy. The two men have differences of opinions regarding the undead, which results it long conversations and arguing.

When Glenn spills the secret that Hershel keeps walkers in the barn, the season really picks up the pace. The group argues over what to do about all of the walkers, which leads to the massacre of walkers at the barn. When the final walker exits the barn, everyone is shocked to see Sophia emerge. This was emotional for everyone and Rick had to be the one to put her down.

The addition of a prisoner, Randall, leads to lots more disagreements. Shane takes matters into his own hands and confronts Rick away from the group. Before Shane can kill Rick, Rick gets the upper hand and kills him. When Shane reanimates, Rick discovers what Dr. Jenner told him was true, everyone is infected, as Shane wasn’t bit or scratched by a walker but quickly turned.

A horde of walkers then descends on the farm, requiring everyone to flee. Andrea is left behind but rescued by a newcomer, Michonne. The next day, Rick tells the group what Jenner told him and that he found it to be true. The group becomes angry with him, and he tells them he didn’t ask to be the leader and they are welcome to leave. But, “If you’re staying, this isn’t a democracy anymore.”

The season ends with a peek at the prison that is introduced in season 3.
