The scene had a profound impact on viewers
The death of Glenn in The Walking Dead has been voted as the saddest death in TV history.
More than four million votes were cast in the poll which was launched by popular voting site Ranker as social media users flocked to share their opinion on the poll titled: ‘The Saddest Television Deaths Ever’.
The intense vote ended as Glenn Rhee, portrayed by the talented Steven Yeun, claimed the top spot.
Glenn first graced our screens in the series premiere of AMC’s The Walking Dead.
His character, a resourceful and compassionate former pizza delivery guy, quickly became a fan favourite.
Glenn’s humorous nature, unwavering courage and endless hope made him an endearing character as he navigated his way through the post-apocalyptic world.
His relationship with Maggie (played by Lauren Cohan) was a beacon of hope in the dystopian show.
However, the Season 7 premiere left fans in a state of shock, grief and disbelief.
The episode titled ‘The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be’ opened with one of the most brutal and heart-breaking scenes in television history as Glenn met his demise.
Negan, the menacing leader of the Saviours, had captured Glenn, Rick, and their friends.
Negan decided to make an example of one the group — as a means of showing Rick’s crew who was in charge now.
He played a game of ‘eeny, meeny, miny, moe’ and though it was Abraham who ended up on the receiving end of Negan’s wrath, he also suddenly turned on Glenn too.
His brutal death and haunting last words left viewers in tears and social media was awash with grief-stricken fans.
Steven Yeun’s portrayal of Glenn earned him several accolades.
The scene took top spot in the vote closely followed by the death of Hodor in Game of Thrones.
Meanwhile, Opie Wilson’s death in Sons of Anarchy was in third place with fourth place being taken by Lady the Direwolf in Game of Thrones.
Another Walking Dead character’s death came fifth in the vote, the death of Hershel Greene.
