James Graham’s Sherwood is one of Britain’s most-watched dramas of 2022.
Walking Dead’s David Morrissey is well known as the Governor in the long-running series. His portrayal of one of the worst villains in the series was an example of the diversity of his talents as an actor. Deadline reports that Morrissey will return to another great series, Sherwood, in its second season.
James Graham created the BBC crime drama Sherwood, and its first season was one of the most-watched British dramas of 2022. Graham, who is also adapting his Dear England play for TV, wrote all six episodes for the upcoming second season and will executive produce with Juliette Howell, Tessa Ross, Harriet Spencer, and Jo McClellan. Kate Ogron is the producer for the series with Clio Barnard as lead director and EP.
Morrissey portrays DCS Ian St. Clair in a series that is based on actual murders that took place in Nottinghamshire, England, in 2004. The first season, set in 2014, told of two killings that shook the already fragile mining community. This storyline was inspired by the murders of Gary Jackson and Keith Frogson, who were both involved in the union.
Season two brings the story to the present and will introduce two new families who become involved in the lives of the Sparrows from the previous season. This finds them involved in the complex web of local gangs, old rivalries, revenge, and betrayal. The new Sheriff of Nottingham is passionate about the community and finds himself fighting against the proposal of a new mine. While the new mine would bring jobs to the community, the sheriff believes it will only bring about unwelcome reminders of the past.
Lesley Manville returns in season 2 as Julie Jackson, with Morrissey’s St. Clair also returning. Philip Jackson will reprise his role as the Sparrow family patriarch, Mickey, as will Lorraine Ashbourne, Mickey’s wife, Daphne. Perry Fitzpatrick and Bill Jones return as the Sparrow’s sons, Rory and Ronan. Other cast members announced for season 2 include Robert Lindsay, Monica Dolan, Sharlene Whyte, and Stephen Dillane.
Season 1 is available to view on BBC iPlayer, but is only available in the UK.
Sherwood season two is produced by House Productions and will air on BBC iPlayer and BBC One later this year. BBC has released the first look images for the upcoming season, (see below).
