The Walking Dead franchise spawned multiple spinoffs and sequels, and Danai Gurira weighs in on a possible reunion.
Danai Gurira reprised her role as Michonne in The Ones Who Live, one of The Walking Dead‘s spinoffs, and she addressed the possibility of a reunion between all the characters.
Gurira, who joined the original show in Season 3, appeared in 126 episodes before exiting in Season 10. However, she returned for the new spinoff, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, which reunited her with Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes, whom she believed had died in Season 9. Their new show only features the two of them, but Gurira also addressed the possibility of reuniting with the rest of the original characters, noting that “anything’s possible.”
The Walking Dead concluded after 11 seasons, but it spawned multiple spin-offs. Some of them, like Fear the Walking Dead, featured brand-new characters, further exploring the post-apocalyptic universe. Some of them focused on the original characters. The Walking Dead: Dead City followed Negan and Maggie, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon followed the fan-favorite titular character, with Carol expected to join Season 2, and The Ones Who Live told the story of Rick and Michonne’s reunion.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Danai Gurira responded to the possibility of a The Walking Dead: Endgame scenario, which would reunite the original characters to end the series. “Anything’s possible. We poured all we had to try to make this very fulfilling experience for people because people waited for it for a long time.” Both Dead City and Daryl Dixon will return with a second season, which could make a reunion even more likely.
Danai Gurira Addressed The Future of The Ones Who Lived
Rick left The Walking Dead in Season 9, but there have been plans for his return for a long time. The star was originally supposed to return with a movie, which eventually turned into a trilogy of feature films. However, plans changed, and the result was The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, a six-episode limited series.
Starring Lincoln, Gurira, with longtime showrunner Scott Gimple attached as showrunner and executive producer, the new spinoff turned out to be a success, with the first episode breaking records. However, will the series continue past its initial six-episode plan?
Gurira played coy about the show’s future during her interview with the same outlet. “You know I can’t answer that!,” the actress replied, adding that “AMC handed us the reins. Ultimately, what you see is our vision.”
Gimple previously teased a possible Season 2, cryptically adding that: “Even if Rick dies in the last episode, anything is possible. We’re focused on this one right now.”
There are two episodes left of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, which will premiere on Mar. 24 and Mar. 31 on AMC and AMC+.
