Who says zombies can’t be funny?

Scott M. Gimple, chief content officer for AMC’s The Walking Dead, has confirmed a comedic spinoff is currently in the works. Gimple — who joined The Walking Dead as a writer during Season 2 and served as showrunner from Season 4 through Season 8 — made the announcement during The Walking Dead Holiday Special, which streamed exclusively on AMC+.

“We are working on a straight Walking Dead comedy right now,” Gimple said. “We’re not making fun of our world,” he assures, “but it’s just more of a comedic take on the world.” Notably, an established horror franchise putting out a more overtly humorous project isn’t entirely unheard of, with previous examples including Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives and the Evil Dead franchise’s Army of Darkness.

At this time, additional details regarding The Walking Dead‘s upcoming comedy spinoff are unavailable, including whether it will be a full ongoing series, a mini-series or something else entirely. What we do know, however, is that this is only one of numerous new spinoffs AMC has planned for the franchise as the main Walking Dead television series nears its end.

Based on the Image Comics series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard, AMC’s The Walking Dead premiered in 2010 and recently concluded the main run of its 10th and penultimate season. The series has already spawned two spinoffs: the ongoing Fear the Walking Dead and the 20-episode limited series The Walking Dead: World Beyond.

The main Walking Dead series is slated to air six bonus episodes of Season 10 in starting in February of 2021, with the show’s 11th and final season set to arrive later in the year. Meanwhile, Fear the Walking Dead premiered its sixth season back in October and is currently on its mid-season break. Fear is expected to return for the back half of Season 6 in 2021, and has already been renewed for Season 7. Meanwhile, World Beyond concluded its first 10-episode season a few weeks ago, and will return for its second and final season in 2021 as well.

In addition to the newly-announced comedy spinoff, an anthology series titled Tales of the Walking Dead was announced previously. An untitled spinoff series starring the characters of Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier (played by Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride, respectively) is also in the works. Moreover, a Walking Dead film marking the return of Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes is on the way, with a trilogy planned.

The Walking Dead stars Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Khary Payton and Cooper Andrews.
