Seven, the dog featured in the AMC zombie apocalypse TV show ‘The Walking Dead’ has died, the franchise’s X account confirmed Thursday. Earlier, the show’s lead actor announced Seven’s passing, saying that he was the ‘bestest TV buddy ever.’ A Belgian Malinois, Seven appeared in 25 episodes of the series as lead character Daryl Dixon’s (played by Reedus) pet. A cause of death was not disclosed.
Seven was introduced in the series staring the season 9 episode “Stradivarius” in 2018. Named just as ‘the Dog,’ Seven won hearts with his performance as the canine companion of Daryl Dixon and became a fan favourite.
Seven was an excellent animal actor, and has been described as a dog with a ‘brain’ and ‘acting spirit’ by David Boyd, the director of the episode ‘Find Me’ which delved into the background of the dog in ‘The Walking Dead.’
“In prep, you go, ‘This dog is never going to do any of it,’ right? You read the script and you go, ‘OK, he goes there and stops there and he barks there. It’s never going to happen. It’s going to take 19 hours to get one thing out of this dog.’ But no. Take one. Boom! We go, OK. We look at each other and say, ‘Well, do we need another take?'” Boyd told the Huffington Post describing his experience of working with seven on the sets of the show.
The Belgian Malinois is a breed of herding dog named after the Belgian city of Malines, where it was developed. The Malinois is one of four varieties of Belgian shepherd dogs, which also include the Tervuren, Groenendael and Laekenois. Speaking about Belgian Malinois, Boyd said that the danger with this breed is that ‘they just won’t give up.’
“The danger with this breed is that they just won’t give up,” he said. “And so if you lose contact with them, if you’re in the real world and you’ve given the dog a task, it literally will drop dead to do it. So, all of us, the trainers especially, have to be aware of how far that dog will go. If you lose contact, that guy is going to run through the woods.”
