But there’s one thing that clearly jumped out at everyone, and has since we first caught a glimpse of this person in the season 10 trailer.
Who exactly is this crazy looking individual in the iron mask wielding double scythes and ninja moves?
The one thing we did learn last night is that they are with Maggie, either a part of whatever group she has been with this whole time, or someone she befriended in her travels somehow. But questions are obviously being raised about who the show might be hiding under the mask.
So, a few theories:
Heath – This is absolutely the one we hear the most often, as Heath disappeared many, many years ago on the show, one of the few characters to do so without some sort off master plan attached to their storyline (ie. Rick and Michonne). And yet the showrunners have pretty much all but confirmed that Heath was abducted by CRM, the Helicopter People, so I don’t know how that translates into him being here with a mask and wild weaponry.
Morgan (or any Fear character) – If the show is hiding anyone, I could see this idea potentially being the case. At the current moment, Fear is several years behind the main series, so it could make sense for the show to cross over with a time jump for a single character “escaping” that show. And yet this still does seem somewhat far-fetched to me.
Claudia – I heard a far-flung fan theory about how this is Claudia from the one-off TWD comic that featured Jeff Grimes, Rick’s brother. Claudia was given a message from Jeff to give to Rick, so the theory is that this mystery character is her, trying to deliver that. Sorry but, no. Too wild for me, plus why bother hiding the face of a comic character no one would even recognize> I will say that I can buy that the masked person could be a woman, given the lengths they’ve gone to hide their true body shape and they’re even wearing gloves.
Mercer – This was pretty much disproven last night when Eugene and company ran into the white-and-red clad soldiers from the Commonwealth. If Mercer is showing up (and he is) he’ll be dressed like that, not as this weird masked person.
Someone New – What makes the most sense to me is that this is an entirely new character. Yes, it’s true that on TV you don’t really hide someone behind a mask unless it’s someone that viewers or the cast will recognize. And yet Maggie’s little side adventure was not a part of the comics at all, so I don’t know who they would be pulling from there. And again, there are very, very few characters that have “disappeared” from the show in the past this could be as a “reveal,” and the ones that have don’t really make sense.
We are going to have to wait a while for answers to this. In the next six season 11 episodes which are self-contained, we may get one about Maggie’s backstory for where she’s been and how she met this person, but those won’t be here for a while. Until then, keep speculating.
