Zombie movie fans will be stunned to learn that several small movies have been shot on iPhones.

Cillian Murphy’s next movie may have a different look to it. That’s because it was shot entirely on an iPhone 15 Pro Max.

28 Years Later, the third installment of the zombie franchise, finished shooting over the summer. Wired has learned that the thriller, directed by Danny Boyle, is the largest movie to date to be shot on a smartphone.

A sequel came out in 2007 called 28 Weeks Later, though Murphy was not involved in that film.

The new movie, set to be released in June 2025, exists in that same world, but 28 years later. It also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell.

The 2002 film was also shot using innovative technology at the time. It was filmed with a digital camera, the first Hollywood movie to be shot on a Canon XL-1.

The filmmakers using iPhones has been kept a secret, Wired said. Staff and cast signed a non-disclosure agreement that prevented them from talking about the extraordinary methods, but paparazzi photos have captured Comer acting in front of an iPhone.

Other small movies have been shot on iPhones, including Sean Baker’s Tangerine and Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane, but this is the largest film to do so, with a budget of $75 million.
