The show is beginning to take shape

After hunting zombies for a few seasons, The Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green is headed to space as Star Trek: Discovery’s main actor, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Martin-Green, best known for her role as Sasha Williams in The Walking Dead, has signed on to play the lieutenant commander of the USS Discovery. Former showrunner Bryan Fuller previously confirmed that Discovery would focus on the lieutenant commander, making it a first for the franchise. Prior series have focused primarily on the captain, like Jean-Luc Picard in The Next Generation or James Kirk in the original series.

The publication is also reporting that Martin-Green will remain on The Walking Dead for the time being, but will film both series simultaneously. CBS declined to comment on the role to The Hollywood Reporter, but Polygon has reached out for comment.

Martin-Green joins Michelle Yeoh, Anthony Rapp and Doug Jones as members of the Discovery. CBS announced that Yeoh will be playing Captain Georgiou, while Rapp and Jones take on the respective roles of Lieutenant Stamets and Lieutenant Saru.

Star Trek: Discovery will take place 10 years before the events of the original series, according to Fuller. It will feature new alien races, planets and will focus on an event that is mentioned in the original series but never fully explored. Fuller recently confirmed that he was parting ways with CBS entirely on the project due to time constrictions with other projects.

Star Trek: Discovery will debut in May 2017.

Following Martin-Green’s end on The Walking DeadStar Trek: Discovery officially welcomed the actress to the series. Martin Green will play First Officer Michael Burnham, according to a blog post on the show’s website. A tweet from CBS also provides the first look at Martin-Green in costume.
