Hell on wheels is coming to The Walking Dead: Dead City. Sons of Anarchy vet Kim Coates has been tapped by AMC’s fourth spinoff in the franchise to tackle a series-regular role in Season 2, our sister site Deadline reports.

Who, exactly, the actor will be playing is being cloaked in mystery, at least for the time being. But Deadline hears that the part is a biggie. If you ask us, the smart money is on Coates’ character being a foil for Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s reformed Negan, who at the end of Season 1 was pressed into service by The Dama. Continuing to atone for the murder of Maggie’s husband Glenn in the Season 7 premiere of the mothership, the Saviors’ former leader agreed to work for the villainess, lest she take from Maggie and Glenn’s son Hershel more than his toe. (Read the full recap of the Season 1 finale here.)
Coates, whose other TV credits include Prison Break, three CSI series and Bad Blood, joins a cast that’s headed up by Morgan and Lauren Cohan and features Željko Ivanek as the crazy-scary Croat, Gaius Charles as New Babylon marshal Perlie Armstrong, Logan Kim as Hershel, Lisa Emery as The Dama and Mahina Napoleon as Ginny, the traumatized daughter of another of Negan’s victims.
Dead City was renewed for a second season in July 2023 along with The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (before it had even premiered!). But while Daryl Dixon is set to return this summer, no date (or even season) has been released yet for Dead City. (Get a sneak peek at Norman Reedus’ Daryl and Melissa McBride’s Carol in action in Season 2 of Daryl Dixon here.)
