Netflix’s successful streak of horror K-dramas continues with the release of a new series, making the long wait for All of Us Are Dead 2 even worse.
With only four months into 2024 as of the writing of this article, Netflix has already released some amazing K-dramas across different genres. Those who enjoy romantic comedy, for example, have had series like Doctor Slump and Queen of Tears. Horror enthusiasts have gotten series like The Bequeathed and Parasyte: The Grey, the latter of which is based on the Parasyte manga by Hitoshi Iwaaki and combines monsters with deeper themes like All of Us Are Dead.
Parasyte: The Grey Continues Netflix’s Successful Horror K-Drama Streak
Netflix horror K-dramas like All of Us Are Dead have become their own genre
Parasyte: The Grey is the latest entry in a series of Netflix horror K-dramas, serving as a reminder that All of Us Are Dead season 2 is still far away. Although Parasyte: The Grey is a very unique project from director Yeon Sang-ho in the sense it expands the world of Japanese manga in live-action, the series shares some similarities with other horror dramas on Netflix. The easiest comparison is between Parasyte: The Grey and Hellbound, as the latter was also created by Yeon Sang-ho. However, All of Us Are Dead also falls into the Netflix horror K-drama genre.
Netflix itself has acknowledged the parallels between Parasyte: The Grey and All of Us Are Dead in an Instagram post where parasites are added to scenes from other dramas. In one of the images, Su-in’s parasite form approaches Cheong-san from All of Us Are Dead for a hilarious crossover. The post also combines Parasyte: The Grey with shows like Sweet Home and Gyeongseong Creature, further illustrating how successful this genre has been to Netflix. Some of the best Netflix K-dramas are horror shows, which makes the long wait for All of Us Are Dead season 2 even worse.
All Of Us Are Dead Is One Of Netflix’s Best Horror Dramas (& But S2 Still Hasn’t Happened)
Parasyte: The Grey reminds us of how great All of Us Are Dead 2 can be
It is not uncommon for successful Korean web series to take years between seasons, as seen with Squid Game and Hellbound .
Even though Parasyte: The Grey and All of Us Are Dead come from different directors and deal with different teams, the former is a good reminder of how exciting the latter’s second season can be. Netflix’s K-drama content has been incredibly consistent over the past couple of years, with each new release being at least interesting enough to check out. It is no surprise that some of the best and most promising Korean directors are working with the stream to create original web series, many of which become global hits on the platform.
All of Us Are Dead season 1 was quite successful for Netflix, prompting a season 2 renewal a few months later. Still, more than two years later, viewers don’t know when season 2 will premiere. Many other shows have been released in the meantime, and while it is great to see more promising horror dramas streaming on Netflix, this makes the wait for All of Us Are Dead’s sequel more disappointing. That said, it is not uncommon for successful Korean web series to take years between seasons, as seen with Squid Game and Hellbound, both of which return in 2024.
What To Expect From All Of Us Are Dead Season 2
There has yet to be a trailer for All of Us Are Dead 2
All of Us Are Dead season 2 is set to be very different from the first season, mainly because the school where most of the show took place has been destroyed. The surviving All of Us Are Dead characters are living in a quarantine zone set up by the military, meaning they should be safe for now. Interestingly, the hit zombie K-drama will no longer have the source material to follow given that season 1 covered most of the Now In Our School webtoon. Therefore, All of Us Are Dead2 will be an original story.
Some of the biggest storylines going into All of Us Are Dead season 2 include whether Cheong-san is really dead, Nam-ra’s future with the halfbies, and what the military will do to contain the outbreak. All of Us Are Dead season 1 changed Nam-ra’s ending from the webtoon, suggesting her storyline with the halfbies will be very important. Likewise, while everything points to Cheong-san being dead, he is too big of a character not to be revisited in season 2. All of Us Are Dead season 2’s announcement video even included Yoon Chan-young, who plays Cheong-san.
It will be interesting to see how different All of Us Are Dead’s new season will be from the show’s debut now that it no longer has the webtoon to adapt. There were major differences between season 1 of the Netflix show and the webtoon, including but not limited to the origin of the Jonas virus and what happened to Nam-ra at the end. Considering all the changes worked, All of Us Are Dead season 2 should not have a problem going beyond the source material. Series like Sweet Home and Parasyte: The Grey prove this approach can work.
When Will All Of Us Are Dead Season 2 Premiere?
All of Us Are Dead season 1 was released in 2022
All of Us Are Dead season 1 premiered on January 28, 2022, and the show was officially renewed for a second season on June 6. Using other Netflix K-drama hits like Sweet Home and Squid Game as a reference, All of Us Are Dead season 2 could be eyeing an early 2025 release. A three-year window between seasons 1 and 2 may sound too much, but while waiting so long for a show to return is frustrating, other Netflix series have gone through similar hiatuses.
For example, Sweet Home season 1 premiered in December 2020, whereas Sweet Home season 2 arrived in December 2023. Squid Game took the world by storm in September 2021, yet season 2 will only premiere in 2024. All of Us Are Dead may have to include a time skip somewhere in season 2 for the show to catch up with how much time has passed in the real world, similar to what Sweet Home did. Fortunately, other great Netflix horror dramas like Parasyte: The Grey and Gyeongseong Creature can make the wait for All of Us Are Dead season 2 easier.
