Prince Harry and Meghan Markle might not have been invited to spend Christmas with the royal family, but a source said that won’t stop them from making the day ‘extra special’
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are set to spend Christmas in America with her mom Doria Ragland, according to a source.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been in the U.S. for the holidays for the past few years after stepping down from the royal family. It’s believed the pair haven’t received an invite to spend Christmas with the royals and will instead be celebrating in their Montecito mansion.
A source said Meghan and Harry are hoping to make the day “extra special” for their two young children – Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. “Meghan’s mom Doria will join them at home in Montecito and they’ll ensure the children have a joyful day, despite not being around extended family,” the source said.
They also claimed Meghan and Harry hadn’t been expecting an invite from the royal family. The couple did get an offer to spend Christmas with Harry’s uncle Charles Spencer at Althorp House, but “had to turn it down.”

The source claimed security is the big issue preventing Harry and Meghan from coming to the U.K. Speaking to Closer, they said, “Both Harry and Meghan agree that they shouldn’t return to the U.K. until the security arrangements are resolved. Until then, they will only travel to the U.K. for special occasions or pre-planned visits.”
Once the security issues have been resolved, however, the source suggested Harry and Meghan could return to the U.K. more often. While Harry has made several trips to the U.K. in recent years, his wife hasn’t visited the country since Sept. 2022.
With the Sussexes set to spend Christmas with Meghan’s mom, royal expert Jennie Bond has explained why the former Suits star prefers spending the holidays in California. “I think most women like to be with their moms on Christmas Day,” she shared.
Speaking to OK! Magazine, the expert added, “Given that Doria does not seem to have any other family she wants to share the festivities with, I think it’s a fair bet that Meghan will want to be with her and that would mean them all being in California. I don’t imagine that Doria would want to spend such a special time with people she barely knows – in other words the Spencers.”
