Jensen Ackles could potentially be joining The Walking Dead universe, and his role would open up the opportunity to have two huge Supernatural reunions. After 14 years, The Walking Dead is still producing new content, and with numerous spinoff shows still ongoing, Ackles could be the franchise’s next big addition. The Supernatural star has had some big appearances lately, as his latest show, Tracker, debuted to strong reviews while his role as Soldier Boy in The Boys provided some hilarious quotes and showcased his incredible range, setting him up for a potential appearance in the iconic zombie franchise.
Although nothing is confirmed, Ackles did express some interest in joining The Walking Dead universe, and while he would undoubtedly be a great addition, the franchise would also allow him to share the screen with some of his Supernatural costars. The Boys‘ Gen V spinoff already featured some Supernatural reunions last year, as Ackles appeared in the show alongside Maddie Phillips and Alexander Calvert. Although this reunion was fun, Phillips and Calvert’s characters didn’t have a huge connection to Ackles’ Dean Winchester; however, his potential Walking Dead role could reunite him with two big Supernatural actors.
Jensen Ackles Could Reunite With Jeffrey Dean Morgan & Lauren Cohan In The Walking Dead
Ackles, Morgan, and Cohan All Appeared In Supernatural
Joining The Walking Dead franchise would allow Jensen Ackles to reunite with Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan. Although Cohan’s Supernatural stay was much shorter than Morgan’s, they each played significant roles, especially regarding Dean’s story. Morgan played John Winchester, Dean’s father, giving him a big part in the show which allowed him to build plenty of chemistry with Ackles. Cohan played Bela Talbot, a con artist and one of the show’s antagonists who also had a direct connection to Dean. Both had memorable roles and interacted directly with Ackles, making his rumored Walking Dead appearance more exciting.
According to Covered Geekly, Ackles and Morgan both commented on the potential role during a panel in Burbank, with Morgan responding optimistically to a question about Ackles joining Dead City. Morgan claimed Ackles would love to be involved, and while Ackles didn’t outright jump at the opportunity, he also sounded interested in the idea. While he is unlikely to be part of Dead City season 2’s story – which is already filming – Ackles could potentially join his former costars in season 3, creating the opportunity for the Supernatural trio to reunite in a completely different environment.
The Walking Dead Could Flip Ackles & Cohan’s Supernatural Roles
Ackles Played Supernatural’s Protagonist While Cohan Played A Villain Which Could Be Reversed In TWD
Interestingly, The Walking Dead could also flip Ackles and Cohan’s Supernatural roles. Ackles’ Dean Winchester was Supernatural‘s main protagonist alongside his brother Sam (Jared Padalecki) while Cohan played one of the show’s many villains; however, The Walking Dead could completely reverse this dynamic. Lauren Cohan has played Maggie since season 2 of The Walking Dead and has remained one of the show’s central characters, becoming one of the franchise’s most respected survivors. While Cohan has gone from a Supernatural villain to a Walking Dead hero, Ackles could do the opposite if he signs up as a Walking Dead antagonist.
Dead City already has some compelling villains, but with the spinoff seeming like one of The Walking Dead‘s main projects, it may need more enemies in the future. This could allow Ackles to display his villainous side – as he did in The Boys – and oppose Cohan’s Maggie, which would be a complete flip of their Supernatural dynamic. This would be fascinating to see play out on screen, especially compared to their previous outing together, and considering Maggie is one of The Walking Dead‘s most dangerous characters, Ackles’ villain would have to be extremely menacing to pose a real threat.
Why Jensen Ackles Would Be A Great Addition To The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead Is The Perfect Environment For Ackles To Showcase His Talent
Adding Jensen Ackles to the cast of The Walking Dead would be great for both Ackles and the franchise. The post-apocalyptic environment would let Ackles show off his skill set, as the zombie setting creates all kinds of emotions. While The Walking Dead is synonymous with its violent action and intense drama, there is far more to the series, as it can also be incredibly emotional while providing plenty of humor. Jeffrey Dean Morgan has already thrived on the show because of this, showcasing Negan’s charisma and out-of-pocket comedy, while also adding some vulnerability to the character.
Cohan has also been able to make Maggie an honorable and respectable leader who has a more vicious and cold side to her, helping her become one of The Walking Dead‘s best characters. This makes Ackles a perfect fit, as he can deliver an action-packed and dramatic performance, while also adding humor and tenderness to the franchise. He could easily play a charismatic villain somewhat similar to Negan to replace The Croat and The Dama, increasing the stakes of Dead City. Likewise, he could become Maggie and Negan’s next ally, perhaps even joining the proposed Walking Dead crossover show.
Regardless of whether he plays a hero or villain, Ackles could offer a lot to The Walking Dead universe, and if the show gives him a major role, the zombie franchise could provide him with one of his best performances yet.
Ackles has incredible range and knows how to command the screen while getting audiences invested in his characters. Therefore, regardless of whether he plays a hero or villain, Ackles could offer a lot to The Walking Dead universe, and if the show gives him a major role, the zombie franchise could provide him with one of his best performances yet. In addition, working alongside familiar names like Morgan and Cohan means he’d already have some chemistry with his costars, making Dead City the perfect next project for Jensen Ackles.
Jensen Ackles Could Also Reunite With Jeffrey Dean Morgan In The Boys
Morgan Is Confirmed For The Boys Season 4 & Ackles Could Return To The Series
Alongside reuniting with Jeffrey Dean Morgan in The Walking Dead, Ackles could also work with his Supernatural costar in The Boys. The Boys hasn’t revealed who Jeffrey Dean Morgan is playing in season 4, but the show has confirmed that the actor will be a part of the upcoming season. Although Morgan is confirmed, Ackles is not despite playing one of season 3’s most crucial characters. Ackles’ Soldier Boy had a prominent role in season 3 and by the finale, he became the main antagonist but was defeated and placed inside a chamber, leaving his future in the series unknown.
Although he appeared in Gen V afterward, it wasn’t the real version of his character which continues to cast doubt over his involvement next season. However, there are plenty of theories regarding Soldier Boys return in The Boys season 4, meaning Ackles has plenty of ways he could rejoin the show. With the actor expected to reprise his role, a meeting on-screen with Morgan seems inevitable despite their separate storylines. Therefore, if Ackles does return to The Boys and is cast in The Walking Dead, the duo will have two opportunities to reunite and remind audiences of their tremendous chemistry.
