TAUNTON — If it’s looking a little darker that expected in the Whittenton neighborhood this week, don’t blame the eclipse.
AMC’s “The Walking Dead: Dead City” is filming in the neighborhood — and the show takes place during a “zombie apocalyse,” according to an April 4 letter to residents from the production company, Stalwart Productions LLC.
The letter warns residents they might notice an increase in truck traffic, especially in the morning, and says there will be detail officers from the Taunton Police Department on hand to assist.
“We are also interested in potentially paying certain houses to keep some lights off during the filming as the show takes place during a zombie apocalypse,” the letter says.
Do you have what it takes to be a Zombie? ‘Walking Dead’ spinoff show ‘Dead City’ is looking for Boston-area extras for its upcoming season.
Where are they filming in Taunton?
They are filming at two locations, according to the letter:
The former Reed & Barton factory site at 144 West Britannia St.
The Whittenton Mills Complex at 437 Whittenton St.
The Whittenton Mills Complex has been in the headlines recently, when a portion of the the mostly vacant factory complex collapsed during a punishing wind and rain storm in December.
A significant wing from the old Whittenton Mills Complex, located at 437 Whittenton St. in Taunton, was reported to have collapsed during the high-wind storm on December 18, 2023.
When are they filming in Taunton?
Filming is taking place on Monday, April 8, Tuesday, April 9 and Thursday, April 11, according to the letter from the production company.
‘Shutter Island’ also filmed at Whittenton Mills Complex
This is not the first time filming has taken place at Whittenton Mills. Back in 2008, legendary director Martin Scorsese made his horror-thriller “Shutter Island” based on the Daniel Lehane novel, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Max Von Sydow, Ben Kingsley — and Whittenton Mills where Scorsese spent a month filming in the winter of 2008.
‘Dead City’ follows longtime ‘Walking Dead’ characters Negan and Maggie into Manhattan.
What is ‘Walking Dead: Dead City’ about?
The show centers around longtime “Walking Dead” characters Maggie and Negan as “they travel into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland. The city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world,” according to the Internet Movie Database.
Are they looking for extras?
Yes, while it might be a late to apply to be an extra this week in Taunton, the show is shooting in the Boston area April through July and Boston-based Kendall Cooper Casting is looking for extras. Besides the slow-moving body chompers, aka walkers, the agency said in its casting call that it is also looking for extras to play soldiers, post-apocalyptic survivors and other extra roles for the show throughout the season.
A link to the application is available at Kendallcoopercasting.com.
