The film is reportedly a separate story from ‘The Hunt for Gollum.’
Earlier this year, it was announced that The Hunt For Gollum, a new Lord of the Rings movie set before the events of The Fellowship Of The Ring, would be premiering in 2026. Lord of the Rings screenwriter Philippa Boyens, however, told Empire that a second film is also being developed.
Boyens told the publication that The Hunt For Gollum isn’t going to be split into two individual movies, contrary to industry rumors.
“I can tell you definitively it isn’t two films!” Boyens told Empire. “That was a genuine misunderstanding that happened because we’ve begun to work, conceptually, on two different live-action films. The first being The Hunt For Gollum, the second one still to be confirmed.”
Boyens is also serving as a producer on the animated spin-off The War Of The Rohirrim, which will be released in December. If a success, it could point to another anime in the LoR franchise.
“We have an absolute banger of a second film that would just be incredible as an anime,” Boyens told Empire. “But let’s see if there’s an appetite for it.”
