Ghosts of Commerce: Abandoned Mall, a Symbol of Retail Apocalypse, Stars in The Walking Dead

A ONCE bustling mall has become nothing more than a graveyard of old storefronts as it prepares to be demolished and turned into luxury apartments.

Dust, abandoned trash, and shopping bags were left behind at the abandoned Lord & Taylor in the abandoned Monmouth Mall in Eatontown, New Jersey.

However, the 150,000 retail space wasn’t always desolate, according to NJ.

The suffered major closures after the rise of online shopping and has been bought by a big-city developer who plans to build 1,000 apartments.

Any remaining stores in the mall will undergo a “de-malling” that involves changing the enclosed space to an open-air space.

“I think we found what we think in our opinion is the best use,” said Brayan Silva, vice president of development and construction at Kushner Companies, according to the outlet.

“It’s something you see a lot in the D.C, Virginia area and you see how well it plays, turning the suburban into a little bit of an urban city. I think it’s a great concept that’s going to revitalize the area.”

Kushner Companies is owned by the family of Jared Kushner, who is Donald Trump’s son-in-law.

The work on the new Monmouth Square will begin at the end of April or mid-May.

The company is expecting to start construction of apartments at that location by summer or early fall.

Silva said the developer plans to tear down the department stores one at a time, beginning with the Lord & Taylor.

Lord & Taylor closed its doors in 2018 and the JCPenney followed in 2022.

Both vacant stores are so creepy they were used as locations for the zombie miniseries The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.

Many of the stores are left completely barren while others have left items that have since begun to collect dust, according to a video posted by Ray Out There on YouTube.

WHAT’S TO COME

The remaining stores in the mall plan to stay open during the demolition.

Buffalo Wild Wings, Victoria’s Secret, Pandora jewelry store and AMC Theaters still reside inside the giant space.

“We’re going to make our best effort to keep it all safe and accessible and show that it’s open,” said Silva.

The demolition places to reduce the Monmouth Mall’s current 1.5 million square feet space of retail space to about 900,000 square feet.

It will be redesigned as Monmouth Square, an open-air space with a mix of stores, restaurants, apartments, and 115,000 square feet of medical office space.

The plan is to replace interior hallways with outdoor walking paths with greenery, according to site plans seen by the outlet.

Many malls have closed due to the lack of traffic at big department stores.

The U.S. Sun reported on another mall that closed in Lower Manhattan earlier this year due to theft.
