Ash Manish Dayal Walking Dead Daryl Dixon Paris Hilton

Of all the ways The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon could have ended its penultimate episode, I was not expecting a reference to Paris Hilton. But that’s exactly what happens in the final line of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, Season 2, Episode 5 – “The Book of Carol: Vouloir, C’est Pouvoir” when Ash Patel (Manish Dayal) drops an iconic phrase from the heiress’s 2011 reality show: “Paris, we have a problem.”

In the episode — and spoilers past this point — Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) are trying to bring young Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) back to Ohio, and safety. Unfortunately, Ash’s rickety airplane can’t hold four people… The original plan was to bring back Ash, Carol, and Carol’s daughter Sophia. The latter has been dead for 12 years at this point, but that’s an entirely different story. Regardless, seeing the expectation is now three adults and a child, Ash drops the above quote.

And that quote, if you don’t know, which you probably don’t, is the title of The World According to Paris Season 1, Episode 6. The show aired for eight episodes on Oxygen in 2011 and was the third reality series following the celebrity after the hit The Simple Life, and Paris Hilton’s My New BFF. The concept of The World According to Paris, as it were, was following Hilton as she went on various adventures with friends. “Paris, We Have A Problem” also inspired a single by Tedashii.

Here’s the even more bizarre part of Daryl Dixon dropping a reference to Paris Hilton for no good reason as the dramatic stinger to an episode. As noted above, The World According to Paris aired in 2011. While The Walking Dead is often very fuzzy with its timeline, we know that the zombie apocalypse started in 2010 thanks to Fear the Walking Dead. That coincides with the real-world timeline of when The Walking Dead premiered on AMC.

So Ash isn’t referencing Paris Hilton, because she probably died at the beginning of the outbreak in 2010. Sorry, Paris, but it’s true, you’re not escaping zombie hordes no matter how famous you are. So she never made The World According to Paris, and Ash never watched the show. He’s just saying “Paris, we have a problem” as a riff on the classic “Houston, we have a problem.” Because they’re in Paris. Which makes more sense than the accidental reference, I guess? But a weird thing for the Daryl Dixon writers to drop when it’s something that already exists in pop culture.

Regardless, it’s a great way of remembering an iconic reality star who clearly died horribly in the zombie apocalypse. And to Ash’s accidental reference? That’s hot.
