The series Joan will premiere this fall on ITVX
Actor and musician Frank Dillane recently starred in the Disney+ series Renegade Nell in duel roles as Charles Devereux and Isambard Tulley. According to director and executive producer Ben Taylor, the historical fantasy series will possibly receive a renewal. Next, Dillane will star with Sophie Turner in a crime drama, Joan, based on actual events.
Joan is a six-part British crime drama created and written by Anna Symon (Mrs Wilson, The Essex Serpent, Deep Water) for ITVX and The CW, with Helen Black writing episode four. It is directed by BAFTA award-winning Richard Laxton, who is known for his work on EastEnders, Poldark, and Effie Grey (2013). The series is adapted from Joan Hannington’s memoir, I Am What I Am: The True Story of Britain’s Most Notorious Jewel Thief.
Hannington, aka The Godmother, is a notorious figure in the criminal underbelly of London. She rose to fame by pulling off impossible heists while evading capture. Set in 1980s London, when fashions were bold and the music fresh and new, Joan is a powerful female story that chronicles her journey from petty thief to criminal mastermind and extremely talented diamond thief.
Turner portrays Joan Hannington, a housewife and mother, who begins her criminal life as a petty offender to become a notorious criminal. Dillane portrays Boisie, Joan’s second husband, a “professional bad boy,” with Kristy J. Curtis as Joan’s older sister, Nancy, a salon owner. Gershwyn Eustache Jnr. plays an old acquaintance of Boisie’s named Albie, who created a new life in Spain with his wife Val, played by Laura Aikman. The series also stars Nick Blood, Jack Greenlees, Alex Blake, Caroline Faber, and Dorothy Atkinson.
Turner, well-known for her role as Sansa Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones, posted a teaser for the upcoming series on social media.

Turner earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones. She recently starred with Colin Firth and Toni Colette in The Staircase, an HBO Max limited series that told of Michael Paterson’s case in the mysterious death of his wife, Kathleen.
Dillane is well known for his role as Nick Clark in AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead, the first spinoff of The Walking Dead. He has also appeared with Claira Danes, Tom Hiddleston, and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon actress Clémence Poésy in the AppleTV+ mini-series, The Essex Serpent. When he was 16, he portrayed Tom Riddle in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
Joan will premiere on the UK’s ITVX, ITV’s streaming platform, in September 2024 and make its US debut on The CW on October 2, 2024.
