Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol episode 4.The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon‘s big twist put the protagonists in serious trouble during “La Paradis Pour Toi”, but the moment didn’t come as a huge surprise considering the same trick was used two episodes prior. Having produced 14 years of content, the zombie franchise is no stranger when it comes to providing some major shocks, but it wasn’t difficult to see Daryl Dixon‘s latest twist coming. After Daryl and Carol’s powerful Walking Dead reunion, the two began their search for Laurent and Fallou, but despite having an idea of where they went, the protagonists ran into a different duo.
Rather than crossing paths with their French allies, Daryl and Carol instead found an old couple who were expecting their arrival. Laurent and Fallou had already met the seemingly sweet man and woman before driving towards Paris, making their home a relatively safe space for Daryl and Carol. While the protagonists spent several nights there and managed to gather everything they were looking for, things didn’t go exactly as planned. Instead, they were double-crossed and sold out to Daryl Dixon season 2’s villainous groups, which gives off a major sense of déjà vu after episode 2’s twist.
Daryl Dixon Season 2, Episodes 2 & 4 Share Exactly The Same Twist
The Spinoff Has Had Random Strangers Betray The Protagonists Twice In 3 Episodes
Daryl Dixon‘s central characters being betrayed by strangers may have felt more surprising had it not happened just two episodes previously. While the execution was slightly different, the old man selling out Daryl and Carol to Pouvoir felt reminiscent of episode 2’s Greenland trip. Carol and Ash’s Walking Dead horror story in Greenland wasn’t overly dissimilar to Daryl and Carol’s run-in with the old couple, as they were also betrayed by strangers. After being ambushed by walkers shortly after arriving in the European country, Carol and Ash were assisted by two women who agreed to help them fix their plane.
However, their plan was actually more sinister, as the duo betrayed the main characters with one of the Greenland survivors being tasked with killing Carol, while the other intended to repopulate with Ash. The tension and build-up helped make this twist impactful, and while Carol and Ash managed to survive this ordeal, it was definitely a traumatic experience. Sadly, this only made the old man betraying Carol and Daryl a little more predictable, as the series already made it clear that most strangers shouldn’t be trusted or taken at face value.
The recent twist was at least slightly different, as the older woman wasn’t in on the plan, but it didn’t prevent the scene from feeling very similar to the moment two episodes beforehand. Thankfully, Daryl and Carol were assisted by the woman who helped them prepare for Pouvoir’s ambush, allowing them to escape. Still, the spinoff seems to be relying on the same old trick a little too often, and season 2 isn’t Daryl Dixon‘s first time attempting this twist.
The Exact Same Trope Happened In Daryl Dixon’s Very First Episode
Daryl Dixon’s Opening Episode Also Featured A Pair Of Strangers Double-Crossing Daryl
Untrustworthy strangers have been a relatively common trope throughout The Walking Dead, and Daryl Dixon explored this concept in its very first episode. When Daryl first arrived in France, he encountered a young woman and her grandfather who offered him food and asked to join him on his journey back to America. Before their conversation could go anywhere, two Guerriers showed up and began intimidating the strangers and even hit the woman. In response, Daryl helped fight off the soldiers but suffered an injury during the scrap, creating the perfect opportunity for the woman and her grandfather to betray him.
Although this scene also has some slight differences from season 2’s betrayals, it’s clear the show has started a slight trend when it comes to untrustworthy characters.
While asking for his medical bag, the grandfather walked up to Daryl and struck him with a weapon, leading to the duo robbing him. Although this scene also has some slight differences from season 2’s betrayals, it’s clear the show has started a slight trend when it comes to untrustworthy characters. Additionally, The Union also betrayed Daryl in season 2, proving that finding dependable strangers is hard to come by in France. The central cast has had to find this out the hard way, but season 1’s opening episode proved right from the off that strangers shouldn’t be trusted.
How Daryl Dixon Foreshadowed Season 2, Episode 4’s Betrayal
1 Subtle Line Hinted At The Old Man Having Questionable Loyalty
Despite the show’s history of betrayals, some audiences may not have seen season 2, episode 4’s twist coming, but it was foreshadowed earlier in the episode. While Carol was helping the woman cook, the man and Daryl tried to find a car that he could fix and travel to Paris with. During their conversation, the man mentioned that his family sold carrots to German soldiers in WW1 and again to Nazi soldiers in WW2. His family history may just seem like a meaningless line to help flesh out the character, but it’s actually a strong insight into their morals.
New episodes of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol air Sundays on AMC and AMC+.
France and Germany were on opposite sides during both wars, yet his family was willing to sell to the enemy in exchange for a comfortable and quiet life. The fact that he attempts to do the same thing later by giving up Daryl and Carol to Genet to keep himself safe shows that this is a trait that has run for generations. Putting himself and his loved ones above anyone else is likely something he’s been taught throughout his life, making his decision to sell out the protagonists in Daryl Dixon less surprising after noticing this small detail.
