Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 2’s Finale.Throughout the franchise’s history, The Walking Dead has heavily implied that the entire world fell to the zombie apocalypse, but Daryl Dixon seems to have confirmed that one country survived the outbreak. Right from the very beginning, The Walking Dead‘s zombie virus has had a devastating impact on the world, with the majority of the population being wiped out incredibly quickly. While the main show, alongside the several spinoffs set in America, has proven there are still a lot of survivors, the US has undeniably been hurt badly by the apocalypse, and it’s not the only place.
The franchise has only showcased a few countries during its tenure, but The Walking Dead‘s world-building indicated that nowhere went unscathed from the virus. France has been hit just as hard as the US, with the country also becoming overrun by zombies, and Daryl Dixon revealed Greenland fell to the zombie outbreak despite being such a remote location. Therefore, all the evidence suggests that every nation failed to deal with the undead, but that no longer appears to be the case as one line during Daryl Dixon season 2’s finale indicated that there was a surviving country.
Daryl Dixon Season 2 Reveals The Army Took Over & Locked Down The UK Soon After The Outbreak
While The Virus Impacted The UK, It Seemed To Fare Better Than Most Other Territories
Custom Image by Ana NievesDespite how many countries fell to the apocalypse, the United Kingdom actually seemed to deal with the zombie threat relatively well, according to Daryl Dixon season 2. After successfully helping Laurent and Ash escape France, Daryl and Carol were forced to stay behind but quickly began planning their route back home. Without a plane or a ship, they couldn’t head straight towards the US and instead made their way towards England after a Scottish couple revealed the UK dealt with the outbreak efficiently.
As Daryl, Carol, Codron, and the Scottish couple headed through a tunnel connecting England and France, Daryl asked what England was like these days. While Angus jokingly claimed it was awful due to the Scotland vs. England rivalry, Fiona explained that the island was actually good when they left as the army locked things down pretty quickly. Although this would indicate the virus still had a substantial impact on the UK, it seems like the country managed to deal with The Walking Dead‘s outbreak better than the rest of the world based on Fiona’s optimistic attitude.
If Daryl and Carol manage to make it to the UK, we’ll get to see just how quickly the country adapted to the new world and how different things are compared to the rest of the world. However, given Daryl Dixon season 3 is scheduled to take place in Spain, the franchise may only scratch the surface with this location, making the UK one of the most intriguing places in The Walking Dead universe.
All Signs Suggest The UK Is Doing The Best Out Of Any Country Seen In The Walking Dead So Far
America, France & Greenland Have All Struggled, Making The UK One Of The Safest Known Locations In The Walking Dead
While the status of most countries around the world is unknown, all signs point towards the UK being the location that adapted best to the apocalypse. America and France have been explored in great detail and neither country has fared particularly well. Despite Pouvoir’s control over France, the group hasn’t been able to offer much salvation to the French population, as the abundance of variants and large zombie groups indicate it may be worse off than anywhere else. Likewise, America has also seen variants make their way into the country and there has been no containment of the virus whatsoever.
Very few countries have managed to find any sort of answer to the virus, making the UK incredibly successful in comparison.
The CRM’s Walking Dead plan did help them create one of the strongest known safe zones in The Walking Dead universe, but their intention to wipe out the rest of America and take the resources for themselves proves how badly the country has been impacted. Although only a small section of Greenland was shown in Daryl Dixon, the entire region only had two survivors, suggesting the rest of the country was also overwhelmed by walkers. As a result, very few countries have managed to find any sort of answer to the virus, making the UK incredibly successful in comparison.
Until we see the country firsthand, it’s impossible to know just how strong of a position the UK is in after the apocalypse, but assuming Fiona was telling the truth, the undead don’t feel like nearly as big of a problem overseas. The army’s quick lockdown suggests a process was put in place to stop things from spiraling out of control. Circumstances could have changed drastically since Fiona was last on the island, but with all the evidence The Walking Dead has provided, it has to be assumed the UK is thriving more than anywhere else in the world.
Why The UK Was Able To Avoid Total Collapse Of Civilization In The Walking Dead
The UK’s Small Size & Isolated Location Makes It Much Easier To Lock Down Than Other Countries
Custom image by Simone AshmooreWhereas other countries quickly fell apart, the UK appears to have avoided a complete collapse of civilization due to the country’s size and location. When the outbreak first started, each state would have reacted slightly differently in America, resulting in a lack of cohesion and difficulty in isolation. In comparison, the UK’s armed forces and centralized police system mean the island was probably able to coordinate things much better. Even though the UK is split into individual countries, they would likely have come together quickly for a national emergency, allowing them to stop the spread of the virus more easily.
In addition, the UK is relatively small in terms of size, and given it’s an island separate from other countries, it was probably much easier to stop people coming in and out. France’s reaction to the apocalypse will have been much more chaotic as not only did the virus originate there, but its neighboring countries will have caused the country to suffer, alongside most of Western Europe. The UK’s success does make the collapse of Greenland more of a mystery, but given Greenland has such a small population, each casualty probably hurt the country significantly.
With the United Kingdom having strong resources as well as an ideal geographical location, it makes sense that the country has coped relatively well with the outbreak, making it pivotal for the franchise’s future as it could feature in Daryl Dixon season 3.
Why The UK Could Be Vital For The Walking Dead’s Future & Ending The Outbreak
It’s Possible Research On Ending The Virus Is Thriving In The UK If Zombies Are Less Of A Threat
The UK’s response to zombies could be vital for The Walking Dead‘s future, as it may have the best chance of ending the apocalypse. Although France was once the leading country in terms of research on walkers, it’s no longer showing any real signs of finding a cure now that Pouvoir has embraced the undead by creating more variants. There is more promise in America with Civic Republic scientists working on a solution, but the CRM’s plans indicated a cure wasn’t possible, and they were preparing for a future with zombies.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3 is currently filming, but no release date has been revealed.
Luckily, the UK’s survival means research may have continued throughout the apocalypse uninterrupted. In addition, it could be a safe haven for more scientists to migrate to while attempting to minimize the virus’ impact. It could still take a long time for these answers to be found, but the UK may be the safest place to be in the meantime, making it a vital Walking Dead location. With Daryl and Carol heading to England in Daryl Dixon season 3, the spinoff will hopefully answer any mysteries about the UK while potentially revealing some advanced details about ending the outbreak.
