The Walking Dead might be fans of the Assassin’s Creed games as Rick Grimes gives a subtle nod to the franchise.
Assassin’s Creed lovers will be heading to Feudal-era Japan in one of the most requested eras of the game’s franchise on November 15th,2024. Taking on the historic digital recreation of Japan in 1579, players will get to dive into Assassin’s Creed Shadows as the series’ first playable real-life figure, the African samurai Yasuke, and the sneaky shinobi, Naoe.
Throughout Creed’s 16-year history, we have seen protagonists range from a Templar to a Viking, but never did we think we’d see a Walking Dead character mentioned in the same context as these legends. Enter Rick Grimes.
The Excalibur-like Sword of Eden would have provided conflict in Assassin’s Creed Shadows with Oda Nobunaga using it to gain an “unfair advantage”.
Rick Grimes Sure Gets Around
The Walking Dead is one of the most iconic shows ever and I could go on about it for hours, but that’s not the purpose of this article. What is, though, is that our post-apocalyptic hard-man Grimes doesn’t hang around when it comes to some of gaming’s best franchises. Grimes, who already got a crossover in Call of Duty with partner-in-crime Michonne, seems to be a bit of an Assassin’s Creed fan, or at the very least the producers of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live are.
In the first episode of the spin-off, Grimes can be seen with a hidden blade that he pops out of his sleeve in a truly stealthy manner, which is synonymous with the Assassin’s Creed franchise and part of its pop culture. Not only were AC fans pointing at their screens exactly like that Leonardo DiCaprio meme, but the main TikTok account for Assassin’s Creed welcomed The Walking Dead’s nod to the franchise by stating, “Look at Rick showing off his brand new hidden blade 🗡️.”
While fans of the Assassin’s Creed franchise would have picked up on the references straight away, those not in the know would have seen it as just another cool homemade Grimes gadget. In the comments under the TikTok post, one fan pointed out that Ubisoft needs to get ahead of this idea and make it a reality, “Ubisoft do a zombie apocalypse survival game and add things like this to survive!! The game would be phenomenal!!!”.
Another echoed that “A post-apocalyptic assassin’s creed would be wild.”, and I’d actually kind of agree. If it wasn’t for the upcoming AC Shadows, Ubisoft needed something different to freshen the franchise up, and by adding a completely different survival element like the apocalypse, maybe even Grimes could have a chance of being included for real(ish).
