All Of Us Are Dead creator Lee Jae-kyoo has given details on the different types of zombies that appear in his successful Netflix series. The Korean series tells the story of a high school that becomes ground zero for a zombie virus outbreak. Trapped students must fight their way out of the school or become one of the infected. All Of Us Are Dead first began streaming on Netflix on January 28, 2022 and has since become a smash hit.

All Of Us Are Dead seems to be following in the footsteps of Netflix’s previous Korean original, Squid Game, which claimed the number one spot on Netflix within its first ten days of streaming. Since its release, All Of Us Are Dead found itself on Netflix’s top-10 chart for non-English series within its first week of streaming and has enjoyed nearly 125 million hours viewed. The series has since topped charts in several countries including the U.K., Japan, Brazil, Thailand, and France.

In a recent interview with The Korea Times to discuss the series’ success, Lee has explained the different types of zombies which appear in All Of Us Are Dead, and why there are variations in the disease. For example, the series’ villain, Gwi-nam, retains his human consciousness after being turned into a zombie. Lee has explained that he decided to treat this character as “immortal.” Similarly, Lee decided to treat the character Nam-ra as “immune,” as she remains human, but gains zombie strength. Lee attributes this to Nam-ra having stronger antibodies than most. According to Lee, he included the different variations of the disease so he would be able to take the All Of Us Are Dead in different directions in the future.

Lee has also revealed that he came up with the idea for the different variations after seeing how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the real world. Lee has stated that the idea came to him when he realized that “even though people dine together in a closed space, some might get infected while others test negative.” Lee went on to say that he “thought that a zombie virus might also have such variations where people are not 100 percent infected.”

With Lee’s talk of using these variations to take the story in different directions, audiences will be wondering whether they can expect an All Of Us Are Dead season 2. So far, Lee seems uncertain if a second season will go ahead, however, fans of the new series may be excited to hear that Lee has added elements in All Of Us Are Dead season 1 that are designed to be expanded in future seasons. With the series’ success, it is likely that an announcement about a second season will be made sooner rather than later. Until then, fans can enjoy rewatching All Of Us Are Dead to see if they can find the clues that Lee has hidden for coming seasons.
