While their numbers certainly decreased over various seasons of The Walking Dead, Maggie (Lauren Cohen) has a big family tree. The second season of AMC’s zombie opus is often considered one of the worst, due to the lack of action and the fact most of it is spent hanging around a farm. While this was the result of budget cuts, in hindsight this pitstop paid off in future seasons. It was the last moment the survivors felt truly safe and there was hope the world might return to normality; when the zombie horde destroyed the farm in season 2’s fiery finale, it became clear there was no going back.
The Walking Dead season 2 also introduced the Greene family, and Maggie in particular. Maggie has become one of the main characters of The Walking Dead series and has gone through some traumatic arcs. After the main show ended, she later teamed up with old foe Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) for Walking Dead spinoffDead City, which is set to return for a second season.
Hershel Greene
Maggie’s father and patriarch of the Greene family
The late, great Scott Wilson played Maggie’s father Hershel on seasons 2, 3, and 4, and is a farmer with some medical expertise. When Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the gang take shelter at his farm, Hershel treats Carl’s (Chandler Riggs) gunshot. Hershel tells Rick he’ll need to move on once Carl is recovered, but as their stay wears on, Maggie falls in love with Glenn (Steven Yeun), while it’s discovered Hershel is keeping “walkers” in his barn in the belief they can be cured. Shane (Jon Bernthal) then leads a massacre of the barn zombies that proves him very wrong.
Every season of The Walking Dead is available to stream on AMC and Netflix.
Hershel lost a lot when the farm fell, but while it was originally planned he would die during the second season, producers liked Wilson’s performance so much they kept the character around. He soon became something of a mentor to Rick in the third and fourth seasons, in addition to becoming the group medic. Hershel was later killed by the vengeful Governor (David Morrissey) during the assault on the prison in season 4. Hershel’s first wife – and Maggie’s mother – Josephine died of a terminal illness long before season 2, and he later married Annette. This made Hershel the stepfather to her son Shawn.
Glenn Rhee
Husband to Maggie and father to Hershel Rhee
Arguably one of the most beloved survivors on the series, Glenn was introduced during season 1 and helped reunite Rick with his family. He evolved from a somewhat naive former pizza delivery driver to one of the most trustworthy, reliable members of Rick’s group. He meets Maggie when the group stays at the Greene farm, and a flirtation between them soon leads to a romance. He even forms a friendship with Hershel, who recognizes Glenn for his innate kindness and humanity.
Glenn and Maggie’s love story formed one of the emotional cores of The Walking Dead, and viewers watched the former turn from a boy to a man over the course of the first seven seasons. While he became proficient at slaying zombies, Glenn was never comfortable killing living people.
Glenn being killed by Negan is still the most controversial moment of the series, both for its (pun intended) execution and for losing a fan-favorite character. His death would continue to hang over the rest of the series, with Maggie – quite understandably – never being able to forgive the “redeemed” Negan for it. She later gave birth to Glenn’s son, whom she named Hershel after her late father.
Hershel Rhee
Son of Maggie and Glenn and grandson of Hershel
Born after his father Glenn’s death, Hershel has no sense of what the world was like before the zombie apocalypse. In the original series, Hershel is shown to be an intelligent and optimistic young boy, though his hatred of Negan is matched only by his mothers. Hershel returns for Dead City (played by Logan Kim) where he’s kidnapped and taken to New York.
Maggie is forced to work with Negan to get him back, with the latter eventually handing himself over to secure the boy’s release. In the aftermath, Hershel is angry with his mother, claiming she’s obsessed with Negan and only rescued him to gain some sense of revenge for his father’s death. Presumably, this will form part of his story when the second season arrives.
Beth Greene
Maggie’s half-sister and Hershel’s daughter
In keeping with her slightly timid persona, Beth doesn’t make a huge impression during the second season. Beth had a sheltered life on Hershel’s farm before the world ended but after the various traumas she’s forced to live through, she becomes more assertive and confident. Beth also shares her father Hershel’s faith, which may account for her optimism even when things get bleak.
She later becomes a carer for baby Judith following the death of Rick’s wife Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies). After the fall of the prison, Beth and Daryl (Norman Reedus) form a close bond, but she is later kidnapped and forced into slavery by police officers at the Grady Memorial Hospital. Beth is later killed during a prisoner exchange, devastating both Maggie and Daryl.
Annette Greene
Mother of Beth and stepmother of Maggie
Shawn Greene
Son of Annette and stepbrother to Maggie
Another character audiences don’t get to learn much about, Shawn is the son of Hershel’s second wife Annette. It appears he was close to both Maggie and Beth, with both stating how much they missed him following his passing. He’s among the walkers who are killed when Shane discovers the truth about Hershel’s barn. In an episode of Dead City, Maggie is seen looking at an old photograph of Shawn.
Josephine Greene
Maggie’s mother and Hershel’s first wife
Easily the most mysterious member of Maggie’s family tree is her mother Josephine, who died around 20 years before The Walking Dead season 2. She helped Hershel work their farm, and after a rocky period in their marriage due to his alcoholism, they remained together. She later passed away from an unknown illness.
Arnold Greene
Cousin of Maggie and Beth
Another luckless member of the Greene clan, Arnold was one of the zombies being held in Hershel’s barn. He’s seen during the show when Patricia (Jane McNeill) feeds chickens to the zombies and is later killed by the survivors along with his zombified relatives Annette and Shawn.
Jimmy
Boyfriend of Beth and Greene family friend
The large number of supporting characters introduced during season 2 has led to some confusion over who is related to whom. Hazy memories can sometimes lead audiences to think both Otis (Pruitt Taylor Vince) and Jimmy (James Allen McCune) were Hershel’s sons, which isn’t the case. Especially not with the latter, since Jimmy was dating Beth while sheltering on the Greene farm.
Jimmy doesn’t get much to do during the season, but despite being a little immature, he seems like a decent young man. This doesn’t help him in the series finale, where he’s ripped apart by walkers when they invade Dale’s RV; the iconic vehicle itself soon explodes, taking Jimmy’s body and those of the walkers who ate him along with it.
Otis
Ranch hand to Hershel and husband of Patricia
Possibly one of the most quietly tragic characters to appear in The Walking Dead, Otis acted as ranch hand on the Greene farm. He was also a close family friend but is introduced after accidentally shooting Carl. Feeling overwhelming guilt, he agrees to work with Shane to find some medical supplies to save Carl’s life. The two men work together and fight through a horde of walkers in a local school.
However, both run out of ammo and energy and only having one bullet left, Shane shoots Otis in the leg to buy himself time to flee with Carl’s supplies. As he runs away, Otis is heard being torn apart by the walkers, with his death coming as a huge shock to the Greene family and Patricia. Shane also lies about Otis’ demise, claiming he willingly sacrificed himself.
Patricia
Wife of Otis and Greene family friend
Patricia (Jane McNeill) lives and works with husband Otis on Hershel’s farm throughout The Walking Dead season 2. Like Hershel, she also had a medical background, which comes in useful for the various scraps the survivors get into. She was also seemingly in charge of feeding the walkers trapped in the barn until Rick’s group put a stop to this. Patricia holds the honor of being the last human character killed during the second season too, where’s she eaten by the horde that overwhelms the farm.
