It seems that we are in for some hard goodbyes.
The first season of The Rings of Power was largely devoted to exposition. Even viewers who were already familiar with the world of Middle-earth from Tolkien’s books or Peter Jackson’s films based on them had to learn a lot of new things, because the world in the Second Age was very different from what it was thousands of years later, in the time of Bilbo and Frodo.
In addition, showrunners Patrick McKay and John D. Payne allowed themselves many deviations from the canon of the books, due to the fact that the creators of the show only have the rights to a small part of Tolkien’s texts. For example, Isildur got a sister, and Galadriel’s husband Celeborn disappeared.
The creators of the series still intend to present the viewer with a visual that is incomparable to other projects in Season 2. The behind-the-scenes team even has its own blacksmith who will be working on the props.
The Rings of Power Creators Tease Major Deaths in Season 2
But perhaps the most important news the showrunners shared was the fact that The Rings of Power will say goodbye to some major characters in a large-scale battle:
“Sauron’s agenda sets everything in motion: Adar and his army of orcs; Galadriel, Elrond and Gil-galad and their armies of elves — all of which will come crashing together in the most ambitious battle our show has seen yet, a battle from which many big players may not make it out alive.”
Season 2 Will See the Beginning of The War
We don’t yet know which characters will meet an unenviable fate, but we can guess what battle the showrunners have in mind. According to the book’s canon, the elves learned of Sauron’s plans (who was then in the form of Annatar) to enslave all of Middle-earth and drove him from their lands.
Sauron gathered a deadly army of orcs in Mordor and laid siege to the elven city of Ost-in-Edhil, the capital of Eregion. Thus began the eight-year war between the elves and Sauron. As a result of the war, Sauron lost his army and was forced to forget his plans for Middle-earth for one and a half thousand years.
The trailer also shows fiery boulders flying towards a peaceful Elven city. This may be the beginning of the siege of Eregion. In another shot, Elrond rides at the head of a huge detachment of Elven cavalry — presumably rushing to help.
The Rings of Power Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on August 29, 2024.
