Sauron and Mirdania

The following contains spoilers for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, Episode 7, “Doomed to Die,” now streaming on Prime Video.

One of the most shocking components of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 1 was how Sauron (disguised as Halbrand) romanced Galadriel. It helped get him into the Forge in Eregion to start making his evil rings. It showed how cunning Sauron could be, which led to him shape-shifting into Annatar and working with Celebrimbor in the sophomore season.

In his new stint in Eregion, Sauron plays mental games. He cuts communication off from other regions and manipulates the minds of all Elves there, so they can make the relics. Sauron even creates a romantic arc with Celebrimbor’s assistant, Mirdania, to help rise up the ranks. Unfortunately, it ends in tragedy and shows how terrifying Sauron is as a master manipulator.

Throughout the season, the handsome and charming Sauron has used the unwitting Mirdania as a pawn to help with his plan to rule Middle-earth. He plants seeds in her mind that Celebrimbor is losing his mind. Sauron also has Mirdania thinking Celebrimbor has abandoned the army to make rings when Adar’s orc legion arrives. Mirdania loses faith in her mentor, which spreads to the other soldiers.

With Sauron wooing Mirdania, she backs him and helps get everyone to follow him. He becomes their leader. It helps that he subtly promises a better life, teasing that she is a better Galadriel and a queen who deserves a king. It’s very much the same dream he sold Galadriel when he offered her his hand to rule the realm. He was genuine back then, but with Mirdania, it’s pure lies. He just needs a conduit who the forgers and Elvish warriors will believe. It’s tough to distinguish if he’s mind-controlling her, or if she’s that gullible, but she becomes his biggest advocate on a personal and professional level.

When Celebrimbor escapes the prison Sauron kept him in, he tries to rally the troops. He wants them to turn against Sauron. But they think Celebrimbor is not of sound mind. Mirdania is leading the charge, admitting that Annatar is the person they view as their liege now. Sauron spots an opportunity to further his agenda. He uses his telekinesis and has Celebrimbor knock Mirdania over the castle wall.

The orcs below finish her off by hacking her to death. It’s not like they needed to, but it polishes off a brutal kill. Sauron doesn’t even care. She was just a means to an end. Celebrimbor is placed back in the Forge, while the Elves continue fighting for Annatar. This continues Sauron’s plan of getting the Elves and Adar’s army to take each other out. All he needs is for Celebrimbor to give him the nine rings for Men.

It reminds fans that Sauron is always 10 steps ahead. He can improvise on the fly very quickly, as well. He used Mirdania’s love and passion as a weapon, spotting an opening in just mere seconds. In the end, that’s his very nature. He might fall for someone like Galadriel, but it’s an outlier. Ultimately, everyone is a token that he shifts around in his quest to enslave all of Middle-earth.

The Rings of Power Season 2 finale will debut Oct. 3 on Prime Video.
