Jack Gleeson’s performance made everyone hate him so much that he impressed George R. R. Martin
Jack Gleeson’s character in Game of Thrones can easily go down in history as one of the most disliked characters of all time. This is quite an achievement that the actor managed to get at such a young age, considering that he was only 18 years old, when filming, began for the series. Despite being fairly new to this industry as well as the challenge that came with playing a character as complex and villainous as Joffrey Baratheon, it is extremely impressive how strong feelings he was able to invoke from the viewer.
Jack Gleeson at a Game of Thrones event
George R. R. Martin has quite the reputation for being extremely particular when it comes to the portrayal of his beloved character from The Game of Thrones, book series. This isn’t anything bad, as any author would be protective over the creations, and make sure that they are being translated correctly onto the screen. When he saw Gleeson’s performance in the series after its initial release, it involved an extreme reaction from him. This was so dramatic that the author ended up writing a letter to the actor, telling him exactly how he felt about his portrayal of the character.
Jack Gleeson Played One Of The Most Hated Characters
Jack Gleeson’s character in the first season of Game of Thrones is especially unlikeable and there are many reasons for this. While some can pinpoint the root of this he tried to be the fact that he is a spoiled brat, being given far too much power for someone as young as he is, being only 16 years old in the first season, there are other layers to why despite seeing many evils in the series, he is one of the most insufferable characters to exist.
On top of misusing the power he holds, which is too much for someone like him, he also shows no respect for anyone around him and expects everyone to listen to everything he has to say, simply because he is King. On top of this, he also enjoys tormenting other people, loving them, and seeing them suffer. While this makes him an extremely insufferable character and person, it makes him an extremely good villain, being unpredictable, the viewers are at the edge of their seats whenever he is on screen.
George R.R. Martin Loved it
These elements and character traits are to be seen executed so well, especially so when it comes to a character and an actor so young. This is why Jack Gleeson is extremely applauded for his performance in the series. Among the many people who have done so stance, the creator of the character and the author himself, George R. R. Martin.

“Congratulations on your marvelous performance. Everyone hates you!” said the letter.
After the author watched the series after its initial airing, he was extremely impressed by Gleeson’s acting. So much so, that he, according to IMDb, ended up, writing the actor a letter, where he congratulated him for giving such an incredible performance, that forced the audiences to despise him as a character.
