Developed for the small screen by musician and filmmaker Rapman, Supacell follows the lives of Black South Londoners who share a common bond of suffering from sickle cell disease. When they all begin to develop superpowers linked to the illness, they must band together to evade capture by a government organization that hopes to control them. Bending socially conscious commentary, and superhero action, Supacell is unlike the deluge of superhero content on screen.

Scoring high marks from critics right away, Supacell season 1 even earned an elusive 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Perhaps most intriguing of all, Supacell is not based on an existing comic or franchise, making its success even more of an accomplishment in a world of remakes, reboots, and adaptations. This critical success, added to the show’s soaring viewership numbers on Netflix, makes the case for a sophomore outing. However, Netflix has yet to give the show the green light, even if the return of Supacell seems like a foregone conclusion at this point.

With the show taking the streaming world by storm, the latest news sees the creator of Supacell discuss a second season. Musician and filmmaker Rapman brought the superhero series to the small screen, and now he’s excited to continue the story with a multi-season plan. In an interview with UNILADRapman mentioned he had a three-season plan for his burgeoning superhero hit, and that he has already discussed the idea with Netflix. As always, Rapman made it clear that viewership numbers would ultimately decide the fate of season 2 and beyond.

I’ve told Netflix loads of times that I’ve got plans for multiple seasons. But you know how it goes, they’re gonna see how it does, and hopefully we get the next season. But I told them, I’ve got a three-season idea story in my head. So, I got three, not saying it could never go over, but I’ve got three stories, these three seasons in my head, of where I know where the story goes. So, I’m hoping that it comes out, performs really well, and we can go on a second part.

Supacell Season 2 Is Not Confirmed (Yet)

Netflix Has Not Made A Decision Regarding Supacell Season 2

Supacell has shot to the top of Netflix’s charts, a welcome sign for season 2.

As with almost every overnight streaming success, fans are eager to know if a second season is on the way, but streamers like Netflix are often somewhat slow to make a move. As such, Supacell season 2 is not confirmed yet, even though all signs seem to suggest that a sophomore season will be announced. Critical reception only goes so far, and Netflix relies more on long term viewership data than the praise of critics and fans. Fortunately, Supacell has shot to the top of Netflix’s charts, a welcome sign for season 2.

Netflix has a unique opportunity with Supacell, especially as their flagship superhero series, The Umbrella Academy, rides off into the sunset with its final season. With huge shows like The Boys and Invincible taking the superhero craze to the small screen, Netflix can put their own unique stamp on the genre without having to be beholden to an existing comic book franchise like Marvel or DC. Though Netflix hasn’t decided yet, their ultimate decision probably won’t take too long to arrive.

Though there were more than one shocking deaths at the end of Supacell season 1, many of the superheroes and villains survived to fight another day. With that in mind, the cast of Supacell season 2 is expected to largely resemble the cast of season 1, and may even add a few new supes as well. Leading the series is Tosin Cole as teleporter and occasional time-traveler Michael Lasaki, and he’ll likely return if season 2 is renewed. Likewise, the surprise villain of season 1, Veronica (Yasmin Monet Prince) can finally come out of the shadows in season 2.

Considering the grizzly fate he met at the hands of Veronica, Ghetts probably won’t be back to play the role of violent gang leader, Krazy. Furthermore, the sad passing of Michael’s fiancée, Dionne, likely means that Adelayo Adedayo probably won’t be back either.

Though season 1’s finale offered a measure of conclusiveness to the story, it also left the door wide open for more in Supacell season 2. Tragically, Michael wasn’t able to save Dionne, even after he stretched the limits of his powers by traveling through time. This will certainly have an affect on him as he tries to deal with the emotional pain of loss and the physical pain of Veronica’s evil designs. Speaking of Veronica, she stepped out of the shadows as the true villain of the season in the final episode.

With her plan revealed, she will likely stop at nothing to control the supes, and she’s willing to use deadly force to get what she wants. Elsewhere, Tazer will continue to grapple with his place as his superpowers make his life of petty crime seem trivial by comparison. In order to combat Veronica, a community of supes will need to be formed, and Michael is the most likely candidate to bring them all together. As with any superhero show, Supacell season 2 is bound to introduce a few new wrinkles to the story as well.
