The horror cult classic Sorority House Massacre will be adapted for television courtesy of The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus.
Deadline made the announcement on Friday. Reedus’ bigbaldhead production company will produce the upcoming series along with director Robert Schwartzman’s Utopia Originals and Shout! Studios. All three production companies are developing the series with Broadway composer Stephen Trask.
TheWalking Dead star expressed his excitement over working with Schwartzman. “I could not be more excited to collaborate with Robert and his incredible team at Utopia on this project,” Reedus stated. “Their taste and creative vision are inspiring, and exactly in line with the kind of content that bigbaldhead set out to develop. We are thrilled to revisit this cult classic and create something truly unique.”
The project will serve as the first project from Utopia Originals. Schwartzman and Reedus will serve as producers on the television adaptation along with bigbaldhead’s Amanda Verdon and JoAnne Colonna. Danielle DiGiacomo, Brent Haynes, Bob Emmer and Garson Foos will also produce the series.
“When we started Utopia, it was with the intention of not only supporting filmmakers on the distribution side but, also, to expand into working with creatives to build unique, original content from the onset,” Schwartzman said. “With Utopia Originals, we’re excited to hit the ground running with the Sorority House Massacre series and collaborate with the incredible teams behind it.”
Released in 1986, Sorority House Massacre received negative criticism upon its release, with critics claiming it was “too similar” to Halloween. The slasher film, written and directed by Carol Frank, follows an innocent sorority pledge as a mysterious killer begins picking off her sisters one by one over the course of Memorial Day weekend. The film gained a cult following, leading to two sequels, Sorority House Massacre II and Sorority House Massacre III: Hard to Die, being released in 1990. At this time, no casting, production start or release date has been announced for Sorority House Massacre.
