Princess Diana was reportedly wanting to redo her wedding due to numerous upsetting factors, including the presence of “the destroyer” Camilla

With her philanthropy and inimitable style, Princess Diana’s legacy is expansive. Still, we’d be remiss to ignore one of the most enduring tableaus of her life: her 1981 wedding to Prince Charles. From the voluminous puffed sleeves and ruffled neckline to the gown’s lengthy train, her bridal look was quintessential 80s opulence. However, according to new information, Diana wasn’t a fan of her hair look and was eager for a ‘re-do’.

In a new book, It’s All About the Hair: My Decade with Diana, Richard Dalton, who worked as Princess Diana’s hairstylist for a decade, finally details some of his insider knowledge from his time with the late royal—including how she looked back on her bridal beauty with some regret. As he explains to People magazine, though he hadn’t been the one to create her wedding look, her hair was deemed “a disaster,” to which the bride agreed.

“Diana did express to me that she wished she could do the wedding over again to ‘get the hair right,’” he told the outlet. “However, she never mentioned any other regrets while I did her hair.”

At just 20 years old, Diana tied the knot with Prince Charles in a dress by David and Elizabeth Emanuel. Her makeup was kept fresh and simple, with a subtle smoky eye and a natural base, whereas her short hair was styled with a blowout—which was slightly flattened under the weight of her Spencer Tiara.

“As a loyal subject to the royal family, I never shared anything publicly until now to protect her,” Dalton said as to why he decided to pen his book. “[It’s] not a hairdresser’s job to kiss and tell. Now I feel comfortable—27 years have passed, and nothing in my book is detrimental to Diana’s character. Just wonderful memories.”

Dalton also details a decade’s worth of anecdotes, memories, and the ups and downs he saw the People’s Princess experience first-hand.

“Some days she would be happy, some days quiet, some days talkative and some days sad,” Dalton writes in the book. “I experienced all of these with Diana.”

After the two stopped working together in 1991, Princess Diana cut a windswept fringe and layered pixie cut that has become a core part of her iconography.
