The upcoming heavyweight boxing clash between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson has enthralled the world of combat sports, for good and bad.
While the popular opinion is that 27-year-old Paul’s youth will be too much for the weathered 58-year-old heavyweight icon, there are also a number of fighters picking Tyson to get it done. Randy Couture believes the boxing legend will win, as does PFL champion Francis Ngannou.
It all leads to massive interest in a clash between the pair, which takes place at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas on November 15. A key selling point for television viewers has been that the event can be viewed as part of the standard Netflix subscription, without a pay-per-view add-on.
Stipe Miocic predicts Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson
Picking a winner in Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson has divided the combat sports world over the past few months. And legendary two-time heavyweight UFC champion Stipe Miocic has put his backing behind the social media sensation.
Ahead of his own world title showdown with Jon Jones at UFC 309 just 24 hours after Paul vs Tyson, Miocic appeared on Paul’s podcast BS With Jake Paul. The pair are both from Cleveland, and appear to be supporting one another out of a local affinity.
Asked by co-host Jasper who he is backing in the fight, Miocic told Paul: “I got you, babe”. Paul then told fans that they should tune in on November 16 to watch his fellow Ohio native take on Jones, who he feels Miocic will beat.
When the conversation got back to their respective fights at the end of the show, Miocic added that “I can’t wait for November 15, man, you’re going to shock the world like you always do. You’ve got a lot of good things coming your way, you keep doing what you do, I’m proud of you.”
Randy Couture believes Mike Tyson beats Jake Paul
One voice in the combat world who is outspoken in his belief that Tyson will be too much for Paul is legendary former UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture. The American is a rare double champion after also winning light-heavyweight gold, and he feels even at 58 that the boxing icon is too much.
“Everything I’ve seen, I don’t see any way that Jake Paul stands up to Mike Tyson,” Couture told Bloody Elbow back in June. “Then there comes the rumours of special considerations and stipulations on how they fight and I don’t think that’s fair.
“If you’re going to do it, just do it. You picked one hell of a fighter, previously you’ve picked grapplers, guys in MMA that have strong wrestling backgrounds or grappling. Now I say that and he did beat Anderson Silva.
“But the first time he fought a real boxer was Tyson Fury’s brother [Tommy Fury] and that didn’t go very well. It was a good fight, an entertaining, good fight but it didn’t go his way. That’s not the end of the world, he’s at least getting in there and fighting real guys.”
