It’s not just a silly romance fairy tale.
Based on the series of novels by Julia Quinn, Bridgerton has become a much-needed way for people to escape the stresses of real life into the fictionalized Regency era. But even the world of lavish balls, glittering gowns and romantic happy endings can’t protect one from the pain of heartbreak and trials of fate.
Between seasons 2 and 3 of Bridgerton, which were released more than two years apart, there was another premiere that expanded the Bridgerton universe and explained the backstory of Queen Charlotte. However, since the show’s release, Bridgerton’s fans have become aware of a tragedy that is now evident in every episode.
Bridgerton Queen Charlotte’s Wigs
It’s no secret that Bridgerton’s costume and makeup departments have always worked around some of the historical restrictions, creating their own take on Regency fashion that looks better on screen. However, there is one character whose gowns and wigs don’t fit in with the rest, and that’s Queen Charlotte.
While her extravagant gowns and wigs could easily be explained by her status and the need to assert her power among the other guests at all of the season’s events, there’s another layer to it. As many viewers believe, she keeps her style of dressing the same for decades in order to remain familiar to her ill husband, King George.
“Charlotte’s outfits also haven’t changed with time, staying the same as when she and George met, likely to avoid confusion. I think she does crazy things with her hair because she’s likely tired of wearing the same style of outfit constantly, after all these years. Her hair is probably the only creative outlet she gets fashion-wise,” Redditor SleepwalkerWei said.
The love story of Charlotte and George was filled with love and passion, but it was shattered by the King’s declining health. Though young, he fell victim to a mental illness, and no matter how many torturous ways he tried to get better, nothing helped, and his mood continued to change to the point where he couldn’t recognize his wife.
In the Bridgerton universe, King George is still alive and made appearances in the first two seasons, although he wasn’t in the best of health. But even without him on screen, Queen Charlotte’s wigs and gowns will serve as a constant reminder of the tragic fate that befell her own love story.
