Fox’s 6-Year-Old X-Men Vision Lives Again — Thanks to Deadpool and Wolverine’s Epic Team-Up!

Marvel Studios already has the perfect idea for an MCU sequel to Deadpool & Wolverine, thanks to a canceled six-year-old plan for a Deadpool 2 spinoff in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s debut MCU movie as Deadpool and Wolverine has quickly become one of the franchise’s most successful installments, which makes the development of a sequel all but inevitable. Whether Jackman reprises his long-running role of Wolverine yet again or not, Deadpool’s return to the MCU could open up wild new opportunities for the ever-growing franchise.

Deadpool & Wolverine was initially expected to bring Wade Wilson’s Merc with a Mouth permanently into the MCU’s main continuity of Earth-616, but this didn’t happen. Instead, the 2024 movie ended with Earth-10005, the designation of Fox’s X-Men universe, surviving Mr. Paradox and Cassandra Nova’s attacks, and the universe’s deterioration following its Anchor Being’s demise was averted. This suggests that there will be another Earth-10005-set project bringing Deadpool into the MCU, and the perfect sequel to Deadpool & Wolverine could revive one of Fox’s old X-Men movie spinoff plans.

An X-Force Movie Would Be Deadpool & Wolverine’s Perfect Sequel

Deadpool Could Form His Own Team In The MCU’s Future

Ever since Ryan Reynolds first brought his reimagined, more-comic-accurate version of Deadpool to life in 2016’s Deadpool, the Merc with a Mouth has made countless jokes about joining the X-Men, when really all he wants is to be a part of his own team and family. He teamed up with Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead at the end of Deadpool, became a trainee X-Man in Deadpool 2, and fought alongside a new team in Deadpool & WolverineIt would be great to finally see Deadpool form his own team of formidable mutants in the wake of Deadpool & Wolverine.

X-Force first formed in Marvel Comics in 1991, when the members of the New Mutants changed their name, though Deadpool didn’t join the roster until 2010’s X-Men: Second Coming #2. While Marvel Studios prepares to introduce the X-Men in the MCU’s near future, it would also be fantastic to see Deadpool create a new iteration of the X-Force team in live-action. Deadpool & Wolverine reminded audiences just how great this could be, while introducing X-Force creates the opportunity for some different mutants to get attention in live-action, and this could be inspired by Fox’s own canceled plans.

2018’s Deadpool 2 saw Wade Wilson bring together his own team of mutant antiheroes who would be prepared to do the dirty work that the X-Men were too moral to carry out. Dubbing his team X-Force, Deadpool set up potentially years worth of stories in Fox’s X-Men franchise, which would have kicked off with an X-Force movie. A project focused on X-Force had been in the works since 2013, which Kick-Ass 2 and Fantasy Island director and writer Jeff Wadlow had been tasked with developing. By February 2017, the script was being reworked by Reynolds and The Blacklist’s Joe Carnahan.

That September, Cloverfield, Lost, Daredevil and The Martian writer Drew Goddard was working on Fox’s X-Force movie, which was expected to be R-rated and follow on from the introduction of a primitive X-Force team in Deadpool 2. Unfortunately, X-Force was one of several movies canceled following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, but the franchise being revisited in Deadpool & Wolverine creates the opportunity for these plans to be revived. A new X-Force team could look similar to that set up in Deadpool 2, or introduce completely new mutants to the MCU altogether.

Deadpool & Wolverine Reminded Us How Great X-Force Could Be

Deadpool Already Proved The Value Of Superhero Teams

The Void team in Deadpool & Wolverine

Even though the Phase 5 movie didn’t include an exact mention of the X-Force team, Deadpool & Wolverine partnered its titular mutants with some powerful characters residing in the Void at the End of Time, forming a formidable new superhero team. The Resistance team’s battle against Cassandra Nova’s forces contributed to one of Deadpool & Wolverine’s most memorable moments, as Gambit, Blade, Elektra and Laura all showed off their incredible abilities and their brilliant teamwork. This has simply reminded audiences how great a strong superhero team can be.

The Multiverse Saga has, until recently, been without a superhero team, as the Avengers have been noticeably absent, and the Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four haven’t yet made their MCU debuts. This gave the Resistance in Deadpool & Wolverine even more impact, and proved that bringing a team such as X-Force into the MCU would work perfectly. Adapting X-Force for the MCU could even pose an exciting future for Channing Tatum’s Gambit, who many want to see return after he finally appeared as the Cajun mutant in Deadpool & Wolverine.

X-Force Could Debut New & Exciting Mutants In The MCU

X-Force Would Bring Something Fresh To The MCU, Rather Than Just Recreating The X-Men

Deadpool, Wolverine and other mutants in X-Force in Marvel Comics

The line-up of the MCU’s upcoming X-Men team hasn’t yet been revealed, though it seems likely the team will include some well-known mutant characters, such as Professor X, Jean Grey, Cyclops and Storm. After over two decades, it’s high time some lesser-known mutants from Marvel Comics got some attention in live-action, and bringing X-Force into the MCU would be a great way to accomplish this. Psylocke has been seriously underutilized in live-action, but was a crucial member of the X-Force team for many years in the comics, so it would be great to see her developed in much more detail.

Aside from Psylocke, Marvel Studios could include founding X-Force members Meltdown, Cable, Cannonball, Shatterstar, Feral and Warpath in the MCU’s version of the team, perhaps led by Deadpool, similarly to the Deadpool 2 team. There are a plethora of underused or unseen mutants included in Marvel Comics’ X-Force teams, such as Siryn, Elixir, Cypher, Fantomex, Forge, Marrow and Kid Omega, among many others, who would be great to see in the MCU. After Deadpool & Wolverine, the X-Force possibilities in the MCU are endless, so Marvel Studios should certainly debut some of these new mutants.
