Nobody Wants This, the new Netflix romantic comedy starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, has been renewed just weeks after its debut. — but there’s one big change. Created by Erin Foster, partially based on her own experiences falling for her husband, the 10-episode series centers on the unlikely romance that forms between the agnostic and successful podcaster Joanne (Bell) and the unconventional rabbi Noah (Brody) after they meet at a dinner party. The premise has proved to be a success, garnering acclaim, buzz, and also some controversy, ahead of Nobody Wants This season 2.
Deadline confirms that Nobody Wants This season 2 will happen at Netflix. However, there will be a change behind the scenes. Girls alums Jenni Konner and Bruce Eric Kaplan are taking over as showrunners, replacing Foster. They’ll also executive produce alongside Nora Silver, President at Jenni Konner Productions, and returning executive producers Bell and Steve Levitan. The deal, which was announced by Netflix’s COO Bela Bajaria, was made before the romantic comedy debuted.
Foster, who previously confirmed plans for future seasons, reacted to the renewal in a statement. She allues to drawing from her personal experience for Joanne and Noah’s story, expressing her excitement for working alongside Kaplan and Konner and mentioning being a fan of their work. The full statement is included below:
Creating Nobody Wants This will forever be a career highlight for me. The incredible cast, crew, producers and executives all made this into the show it is today, and to experience viewers’ reactions to this series now that it’s out in the world has been more than anything I could have dreamed. I’m so lucky to be able to continue this story, and to do it alongside Jenni Konner and Bruce Eric Kaplan, who I’ve been such a fan of since Girls … Justice for healthy relationships being the most romantic!
What Does The Renewal Of Nobody Wants This Mean For The Show
The Cliffhanger Will Be Resolved
The Nobody Wants This season 1 ending sees Noah deciding to continue his relationship with Joanne, despite the blowback that might mean for his job as a rabbi and the disapproval of his family. With this renewal, the show will pay off that cliffhanger. But it will also answer other brewing storylines, such as what is really going on between Morgan and Sasha. They are the two most central supporting characters, Joanne’s sister and Noah’s brother, played respectively by Succession‘s Justine Lupe and Veep‘s Timothy Simons.
As Joanne and Noah’s romance became more serious in Nobody Wants This, Morgan and Sasha became friends, but is their relationship more than that?
Nominated for five Emmys, Kaplan worked on shows like Six Feet Under and Seinfeld in addition to Girls. Konner, a two-time Emmy nominee, penned 17 episodes of HBO’s Girls. The writers’ room for the first installment was collaborative. Levitan, known for being the co-creator of Modern Family, reportedly had the showrunner role for a time while Foster focused on the writing. Although the shift may seem abrupt, it likely won’t have a major impact on the tone and direction of the upcoming episodes.
Our Take On Nobody Wants This Season 2
Could A Multi-Season Romcom Work?
There are several reasons why the Netflix Original struck a chord with audiences. A large part is thanks to casting, with audiences finally seeing Adam Brody as an unapologetic romcom lead role. Another part is that the series makes great use of the Nobody Wants This supporting cast, which also includes Sherry Cola, Jackie Tohn, and The Good Place‘s D’Arcy Carden. This all combined to give Nobody Wants This a near perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, in addition to a combined 26 million views in a short timeframe.
Nobody Wants This brings Veronica Mars and Seth Cohen together for this 2000s teen drama revival, referencing the actors’ famous character couples.
But even with thanks to the always watchable Kristen Bell, who leaned on her real-life friendship with Brody to nudge him to take the role, the show will have to answer the question whether a romcom that’s mainly focused on a core pairing can be as successful the second time around. Nobody Wants This delighted viewers, who eagerly embraced the largely positive relationship between Noah and Joanne. A second installment may prove to be an improvement, particularly with the show’s controversial depiction of Jewish women. It may also bump against the inherent limitations of its genre.
