Brock Purdy‘s got a problem – or does he? The young quarterback who once boasted a pristine 10-0 start last season now finds himself at a crossroads, but don’t count Mr. Irrelevant out just yet.
“We’ve got playmakers,” Purdy declared in his presser before the Week 3 matchup against the Rams, his voice steady despite the mounting pressure. “For me, man, it’s I still have to do my job in terms of my reads and my progressions.” It’s not just coach-speak, folks.
The 49ers‘ injury report reads like a Pro Bowl roster. Deebo Samuel? Sidelined with a calf strain. Christian McCaffrey? On IR. And now, the bombshell – George Kittle, nursing a tight hamstring, might miss Sunday’s clash with the Rams. It’s enough to make any QB sweat, but Purdy’s not your average signal-caller.Let’s rewind to 2023. Purdy hit a rough patch, dropping three straight after losing key weapons. His stats in crunch time? Not pretty. One touchdown, four picks when trailing in the fourth quarter – the NFL’s worst passer rating in those spots over the 2021 and 2022 season, according to CBS Sports.
But here’s where it gets interesting. Purdy’s not running from the challenge. He’s facing it head-on. “It sucks not having your guys,” Purdy admitted to pressers this week. But then came the kicker: “It’s about how can I continue to be better with my progressions as a quarterback and handling situations and being as efficient as I can — regardless of who’s in.”
That’s not just talk. Remember the 2024 NFC Divisional round against the Packers? Samuel went down early, but Purdy and the 49ers didn’t miss a beat. They switched up the game plan on the fly, leaning on their depth and scheme to pull out a gutsy win. As Purdy told SI’s Albert Breer in January, “We had to change it back up and sort of go back to basics.”
Stepping up when the stars are down
Here’s the million-dollar question: Can the 49ers’ supporting cast rise to the occasion? With Kittle potentially joining Samuel on the sidelines, all eyes turn to the next men up.
Brandon Aiyuk, we’re looking at you. After a slow start to the season (just 28 and 43 receiving yards in Weeks 1 and 2), the $120 million man needs to justify that paycheck. And don’t sleep on Ray-Ray McCloud III and Jauan Jennings. They stepped up big time when Samuel went down against Green Bay.
Let’s not forget about the tight end spot. If Kittle can’t go, Eric Saubert’s number might get called. He’s only got two catches this year, but hey, heroes come in all shapes and sizes in the NFL.
The 49ers have been here before. They’ve shown they can adapt and overcome. But make no mistake, this is Purdy’s moment. He’s not just managing the game anymore. He’s being asked to elevate it.
As Purdy put it: “We have too many good guys, too many good players and too good of a team chemistry to not be able to pull through.” No excuses, no panic. Just a young QB ready to prove he can lead, with or without his full arsenal.
The Rams are coming, and they smell blood. But Purdy? He’s just smelling opportunity. Sunday can’t come soon enough.
