Here’s what’s currently known about Black Summer season 3, including its potential release date and storyline. Black Summer season 2 ends with a cliffhanger, which raises questions about the fate of Rose, played by Jaime King, and her daughter, Anna (Zoe Marlett). The Netflix prequel show also teases a new storyline involving the North Korean character Sun (Christine Lee), and could potentially build to the focal events in the companion show Z Nation, a Syfy series that aired for five seasons from 2014 to 2018.
In Black Summer season 2, Rose and Anna settle on a mountain home after the events of season 1. The mother and daughter ultimately travel to a ski lodge, where their decisions are challenged by fellow survivors Boone (Manuel Rodriguez-Saenz) and Julius James aka Spears (Justin Chu Cary). Rose and Anna reach an airfield in the Black Summer season 2 finale, but their escape plan fails due to zombie attacks and conflicts with other characters, including a group led by Ray Nazeri (Bobby Naderi).
Black Summer season 2, a June 2021 Netflix release, ends with a plane arriving at the airfield to assist survivors, but only one person, Sun, manages to escape the surrounding chaos. The pilot speaks Korean, and so Lee’s character feels relieved and optimistic about the immediate future. On land, however, it’s heavily implied that Rose might’ve died due to injuries sustained from an explosion, and that Anna could potentially become the new lead protagonist in Black Summer season 3. Netflix hasn’t officially greenlit Black Summer season 3; however, it seems like new episodes will be ordered later in the year, possibly by the end of summer 2021.
Black Summer Season 3 Release Date Info
Black Summer season 3 will likely release in 2024. In the past, Netflix debuted the first group of episodes in April 2019, and then renewed the series seven months later. Since season 2 premiered in June 2021, a renewal or cancellation decision may not be announced until early 2022. Based on critic reviews and reactions from Netflix streamers, fans can expect Black Summer season 3 to release around spring 2024.
Black Summer Season 3 Story Details
The ending of Black Summer season 2 kills off numerous people; however, four of the main characters are technically still alive. Nazeri survives a brutal assault at the airfield, and then intends to kill Rose and Anna because they complicated his plans. As previously noted, Sun boards a plane and escapes, but Anna returns to her mother and hopes to leave in a stolen vehicle. Rose briefly opens her eyes, while her daughter displays a look of confidence while surveying the landscape. Based on these images, Black Summer season 3 could potentially follow Anna as the lead protagonist. Since she appears ready to lead, it’s possible that she may find a way to treat and safely transport Rose – but where to? As for Nazeri, it’s unclear how he will react if he manages to survive, which makes him a wildcard character for the next round of episodes.
