SoCal estate

Years before becoming a father, the musician put down roots for a time in sunny Southern California, near many of his former bandmates, picking up a Spanish-style California mansion for $10 million in 2015.

Three years later, he was ready to sell, apparently thinking the home was haunted, according to The Sun. When he lived there during Cole’s pregnancy, he admitted that fear of the supernatural led her to refuse to sleep upstairs.

And despite the 5-acre estate’s lavish amenities, such as a vineyard, a spa, and a meditation teahouse, he struggled to offload the home for years.

Initially offered for $14 million or for rent at $60,000, after multiple price cuts and years later, the home traded for $10.16 million in 2021, barely more than his purchase price from years before.

Built in 1991, the five-bedroom, eight-bath estate includes a Spanish-style main house, two guesthouses, a recording studio, and a teahouse.

The magnificent mansion is in the Monte Nido neighborhood, just minutes to Malibu Beach. This completely renovated home features five fireplaces, hand-hewn walnut floors, wood-beam ceilings, and custom chandeliers, the listing noted.

Other perks that make this a perfect perch for a rock star include a guard house, home theater, game room, wine cellar, two-story library, and anoutdoor living area with a kitchen and fire pit.

The resort-style amenities include a pool, patios, a koi pond, waterfall, vineyard, and organic gardens.

The property details note that the locale is close to “exceptional” shopping and restaurants in Malibu and Calabasas.

British home bases

Shortly after selling his California home, Payne also offloaded an enormous property in Surrey, which he sold for around $8.5 million in November 2021.

The singer had moved into the home in 2015, the same year that he purchased his house in Calabasas, and lived there with his former partner Cole and their son.

The Georgian mansion boasted a host of upscale amenities, including a home movie theater, game room, tennis court, swimming pool, a “hot yoga room,” and private gym. It also backed up to a lavish golf course and featured a one-bedroom annex that was described as being “available for staff.”

After selling the home, Payne purchased another home in nearby Buckinghamshire, a “highly attractive” five-bedroom property known as Foxwood.

According to one of the singer’s neighbors, the pop sensation moved into the home around 18 months before his death in order to be closer to Cole and their son.

It is not known exactly how much Payne paid for the home, however it was initially listed with a “guide price” of $3.58 million.

The home offered plenty of privacy, with the listing details describing it as being “set back from” the nearest road and surrounded by stunning grounds, which included a private natural pond.

“The house offers light-filled and spacious accommodation with tasteful decor throughout,” the description reads. “Upon entering the property, you are greeted by a large entrance hall with a cloakroom/shower room and stairs leading to the first floor. The drawing room features a triple aspect with French doors opening to the garden and an impressive gas fireplace.

“The family room has bi-folding doors to the hall, allowing it to be separated or integrated for entertaining. The kitchen/breakfast room is beautifully appointed with hand-painted units, granite countertops, opening to a stunning orangery with lovely garden views.”
