Rebecca Ferguson is confident that Dune can grow into the next big multimedia franchise. The actor recently shared why she believed the science fiction franchise could become the next Star Wars.

In an interview with Collider to promote her Apple TV+ series Silo, Ferguson shared how she knew before Part One had even been released that Dune: Part Two would be a success. “I think for me, because I had watched Dune, and I was doing interviews … I remember sitting there going, ‘I just want people to see it.’ I heard myself say, ‘If you think Dune is good, wait until you see Dune 2,'” recalled Ferguson. “I remember thinking, ‘I really mean it.’ I mean, the challenges, the angles, the storyline, the music, the scope, the Harkonnens, the graphics, it’s all there. It’s a masterpiece. And the fact that I know people have seen it and the response is what it is, it’s a bit of me going, ‘Told ya.'”

In the same interview, Ferguson noted that, like Star WarsDune is ripe for expansion. “It’s a universe. It’s kind of what Star Wars was when it happened. I don’t want to jinx it, but there’s a lot that can be done here,” she teased. “This is a world. It’s a sexy world, and it’s dangerous, and it has different cultures and life and visions, and Patrice [Vermette], who is the designer, and the costumes. I mean, it’s a spectacle in every aspect. It’s just phenomenal.”

Dune Is Expanding With a Prequel TV Series

With more than two dozen Dune novels at Warner Bros. and Legendary’s disposal, there is no shortage of material to pull from when creating new installments in the burgeoning sci-fi franchise. Case in point, the upcoming Max series, Dune: Prophecy, is inspired by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson’s 2012 novel, Sisterhood of Dune. “[Set] 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, Dune: Prophecy follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit,” reads the series’ official logline.

Prophecy will be the first Dune series released by Warner Bros. and Legendary. A video game based on the franchise, titled Dune: Spice Wars, was developed by Shiro Games and published by Funcom in September 2023, following an early access in 2022. Both titles have helped expand Legendary’s Dune from being more than just a film series, ensuring that audiences have multiple options when it comes to enjoying the franchise.

Dune: Messiah Is in the Works

Warner Bros. and Legendary are also committed to continuing the film series, with an adaptation of Herbert’s Dune: Messiah in early development. Villeneuve is expected to return as co-writer and director on Messiah, which will reportedly not be greenlit until a “strong screenplay” has been written. Ferguson has also revealed that none of the actors have signed on for a third film yet, expressing uncertainty as to whom might get cut for the third installment to shave costs a bit. “I hope I’m in it,” she said. “I’ve got chains and tattoos, I’m awesome.”

Dune: Part One and Part Two are available to stream on Max.
