A blended image of Reenie and Colter in Tracker

Tracker star Fiona Rene responds to the possibility of a romance between Justin Hartley’s Colter Shaw and her character. Tracker season 2 will debut on Sunday, October 13 at 8 PM ET on CBS. The premiere episode will check in with Colter as he takes on a new case and digs into his father’s unknown history. But on a more personal front, there’s also the ongoing possibility of a romance between Colter and Reenie Greene. She’s often helped him out of a tight spot, leading to questions about whether their chemistry might blossom into something more.

In an interview with Screen Rant‘s Rachel Foertsch, Rene was asked if she tried to fill the gaps in the relationship between Reenie and Colter given that some of it happened off-screen. The actor responds that she wasn’t told anything extra about the history between the two characters, explaining how that can be beneficial as a performer and offering insight into Colter’s perspective.

Rene is also asked to share her perspective on whether Rene would actually want a relationship with Colter, jokingly responding: “I mean, I love him, but do you expect me to live in a trailer?” The actor also underlines some of the fundamental differences between Rene and Colter, which would make a relationship tricky:

We know from season 1 that Reenie and Colter did have some kind of physical or romantic relationship in the past. Because so much happened offscreen, were you given more details that helped you build that dynamic?

No. It’s really interesting how much the actors are in the dark sometimes, and I think they do that on purpose, really, so they have more room to stretch and grow and play in the writers’ room. There’ll be times where they contact us and they’re like, “Hey, we’re thinking this and that,” but I think they let us play. What I found was that Colter’s character is so opposed to any kind of relationship long-term because Reenie thinks that he feels guilty for always being on the road and never being able to actually be a good partner to someone, so he keeps himself away from that dynamic.

And I think, as much as Reenie and Colter have this chemistry of, not only playful or sexual, but a really caring friendship chemistry, Reenie thinks that just scared him off. No news here. And what’s the best way to do that, but to accept someone as they are and to be there for them anyway? And I feel like that dynamic has made their relationship stronger for sure.

If the stars ever aligned and Colter wanted to settle down, is that something that Reenie would want?

I mean, I love him, but do you expect me to live in a trailer? [Laughs] You know what I mean? I think that there’s so much love there, but I also think that she would never live on the road. You’ve got two people who are so unapologetically themselves that I can’t imagine how it would work, but who knows?

Rene downplays the chances of a romantic relationship between Colter and Reenie, at least in Tracker‘s immediate future. That works with the news that the hit CBS show is welcoming a new character, played by Floriana Lima. The Supergirl alum portrays Camille Pickett. Described as attractive and haunted, Camille has been Colter’s occasional lover for at least the past decade. They share a tragic history, bonding on the anniversary of Camille’s sister’s disappearance.

The show, which is based on the Never Game novel by author Jeffrey Deaver, will have a lot to work with when it returns to CBS. The network’s top-rated title has lost an original Tracker cast member, with the loss of Robin Weigert as Teddi Bruin. Teddi, who has separated from her wife Velma (Abby McEnany), has meant that Abby and Reenie will be working together more frequently.

The series, which is executive produced by Hartley, Ben H. Winters, Elwood Reid, and Ken Olin, is also looking to deepen tech expert Bobby Exley (Eric Graise). It may not be the ideal time to start what is arguably the adaptation’s key couple, given the lingering Tracker mystery around Colter’s father, but the duo will have room to grow.
