And the series finally shows robots not as villainous creatures trying to take over the Earth.
Studio A24, which has become a major supplier of successful auteur films in recent years, continues to expand while partnering with the largest streaming services.
One of its main partners is HBO, with which A24 released Euphoria. In 2023, the studio already made one of the most important projects of the year for Netflix — the series Beef, and for Showtime — the satirical black comedy The Curse with Emma Stone.
In 2024, A24’s television lineup was expanded with the adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s novel The Sympathizer for HBO.
And the detective sci-fi show Sunny has already made its debut on Apple TV+ and is confidently on its way to become the most watched show on the platform.
What Is Sunny About?
Suzie (Rashida Jones), an American living in Kyoto, Japan, receives terrible news: her husband, roboticist Masa, and their young son have died in a plane crash. But Suzie immediately suspects that something is wrong.
She gets all the information about what happened only from the company where her husband worked and for which he developed home robots. Masa’s superiors answer Suzie’s questions evasively, refuse to give her the bodies of her loved ones, and provide no evidence of their deaths.
The woman suspects that her loved ones may still be alive and that the company Masa worked for is behind their disappearance. To understand what happened, she begins her own investigation, aided by the robot Sunny, a gift from the corporation.Sunny Gives a Fresh Look at the Human/Robot Relationship
The subject of robots — whether in the form of human-like androids or faceless artificial intelligence — has long been explored in cinema. More often through the prism of how new technologies can destroy our lives, and less often — how they manage to preserve something in them.
Sunny is based on the assumption that technology can become a source of warmth and care for us, something close to human. The robot cannot understand and share the feelings of Suzie, who is grieving, but desperately tries to comfort and support her. Where people stubbornly lie, Sunny remains impeccably honest. And this cannot but win over Suzie, who has difficulty finding a common language with others.
Sunny Finally Puts Rashida Jones in the Spotlight
Apple TV+ continues to fill its library with worthy projects in the sci-fi genre, and Sunny is more proof of that.
But the main thing is that the series also features a major role for the talented Rashida Jones, who many viewers may have seen on Parks and Recreation and another recent sci-fi hit, Silo.
