FROM undefeated to winless, Florida State is suffering one of the biggest college football downfalls in recent memory.

After an 0-3 start, Florida State is all but eliminated from the College Football Playoff, and things are looking grim in Tallahassee.

Florida State suffered a heartbreaking end to the 2023 college football season after having a spectacular 13-0 regular season.

The team had a combination of a high-powered offense and stalwart defense, but disaster struck when quarterback Jordan Travis broke his leg on November 18 against Northern Alabama.

Without their Heisman-hopeful quarterback, Florida State’s offense took a huge step back, but they were still able to win the remainder of their games and take home the ACC Championship.

Things only went downhill from there though. The College Football Playoff committee decided not to include Florida State in the playoff, instead choosing Michigan, Washington, Alabama, and Texas.

Both Texas and Alabama had one loss on their record, but still got in over Florida State.

The Seminoles went on to get obliterated in the Orange Bowl 63-3 against Georgia, a crushing end to their season.

The 2024 season was meant to be a year of redemption for Florida State. They would get into the new 12-team playoff to get their revenge for last season.

Transfer quarterback DJ Uiagalelei came in to take over the offense after Travis went to the NFL Draft, and Florida State had a total of 17 commits through the transfer portal.

Their transfer class was ranked as the No. 7 recruitment in the nation, and it would all be put to the test in Week 0 against Georgia Tech in Dublin.

Of course, things didn’t go the way Florida State planned. They lost the opening game of the season, and haven’t looked anywhere close to a contending team this season.

Florida State lost 24-21 against Georgia Tech, 28-13 against Boston College, and 20-12 against Memphis.

Even worse, FSU paid Memphis to lose against them in their third game of the season. The team signed a contract with Memphis to play them at home, and now owe them $1.3 million for the loss on Saturday.

Things are likely only going to get worse in Tallahassee as well, as their schedule doesn’t get any easier as the season rolls along.

In the next three weeks they play three conference opponents in Cal, SMU, and Clemson.

Cal is 3-0 on the season, and has flexed their muscles as a tough team with a road win against Auburn.

SMU is 2-1 and has scored 57 more points on offense this season than Florida State has. In fact, SMU scored 13 more points in their win against Houston Christian than Florida State has scored all season.

The toughest for Florida State will come on October 5 against the No. 21 ranked Clemson Tigers. They will get Clemson at home, but the Tigers are a formidable foe with eight ACC Championship wins since 2011.

It is entirely possible that Florida State can fall to 0-6, and eventually even fall out of contention for playing in a bowl game this season.

So what can be done to turn things around for Florida State to return to their winning ways? Likely nothing this season.

With the strength of their schedule and the level of play they have displayed this season, Florida State will likely finish with a losing record by the time the end of the year rolls around.

Florida State head coach Mike Norvell will also likely be fired by the end of the season, if not during the season, and Florida State will have to reset their program for the future.

Right now, Florida State has the No. 34 recruiting class in the nation for the 2025 year, according to 247 Sports. That number could go up or down before the start of next season, but with only 11 commits they will likely need to recruit heavily in the transfer portal.

If they don’t play things right to end the season and rebuild properly in the offseason, Florida State’s future could be in jeopardy.
