Mike Schur’s new comedy, A Man on the Inside, is in search of season 2.

Like Schur’s other comedies, The Office, Parks and Rec, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Good Place, A Man on the Inside is set-up for a multi-season run on Netflix, as he and Ted Danson reiterated now that season 1 has aired. And there’s promising news on that front.

If you’ve seen the series, obviously the show is set-up for more spy adventures with Charles by the end, and here’s what the duo behind the show are saying about it to Deadline:

Schur: “We’re sort of in a fingers crossed, we’ll that bridge when we come to it, kind of a deal. But I will say that there is no shortage of ideas from me and from other writers about what we might do in a future season. Fingers crossed, we’ll see.”

Danson: “Dear Lord, yes,” quite literally crossing his fingers in the interview.

The good news is that A Man on the Inside is currently performing on all three “Holy Trinity” metrics of Netflix show renewal:

It’s well-watched: The series has debuted instantly at #1 and seems poised to stay there for a while. We’ll have numbers in a week or so, but it’s rare a brand new series arrives literally in the top spot. That’s a great sign.

It’s extremely good: Netflix will not renew series based on sheer quality alone most of the time, but yes, it certainly helps that A Man on the Inside is being received hugely positively by critics (a 95% score) and audiences (a 96%) score. Netflix wants a stable of…good shows.
It’s cheap: I mean I don’t know how much Schur, Danson and the rest of the cast are being paid, but in terms of the concept of the series, this series took place almost exclusively inside a nursing home and half-hour comedies like this in general are very cheap to produce relative to other shows. And Netflix, and all other streamers, love cheap shows.

The fourth metric here that we cannot really quantify is how many people finish the series in full, which is a big indicator about whether a second season will be worth a renewal. All I have is anecdotal evidence here, but I finished it in two sittings and I have a few friends that did the same. It’s very easy to binge all the way through with short episodes and the enduring mystery of the case in question driving you forward.

This is a no-brainer. A Man on the Inside will get a season 2. I don’t know how long it will take to get announced, but there’s just no question based on what we’re seeing here.
